Not very topical, and sort of out of left field, but would anyone care to translate these? The friend who had his wife disappear to China (earlier in the thread) found an old phone of hers and these were sent via wechat (along with some pretty explicit selfies) over the past two years. My wife refuses to look at them, on the grounds that it's an invasion of privacy, but I think it's some sort of superstition thing with her (acknowledge bad things, and they might happen?). I "cleaned" them up in photoshop and tried a few image->text translation sites/apps, but no luck. He says he's "over it" but I think this is the final nail in the coffin he needs to finally move on with his life. I'll take these down if they're too, "internet detective" or creepy.

An objective obituary: https://twitter.com/profwolff/status/1294299491076431873?s=21 It can be summed up in this conversation I came across recently, which is not in the article above. quote:Isaac: Maybe the Luminous Path, but China knows that the Red Arrow are business owners, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and that they protect the city from outside influences. There was a famous Bulgarian communist who warned us about fascism 85 years ago: quote:"Fascism is not a form of state power "standing above both classes -- the proletariat and the bourgeoisie," as Otto Bauer, for instance, has asserted. It is not "the revolt of the petty bourgeoisie which has captured the machinery of the state," as the British Socialist Brailsford declares. No, fascism is not a power standing above class, nor government of the petty bourgeoisie or the lumpen-proletariat over finance capital. Fascism is the power of finance capital itself. It is the organization of terrorist vengeance against the working class and the revolutionary section of the peasantry and intelligentsia. In foreign policy, fascism is jingoism in its most brutal form, fomenting bestial hatred of other nations.... The development of fascism, and the fascist dictatorship itself, assume different forms in different countries, according to historical, social and economic conditions and to the national peculiarities, and the international position of the given country." Hahha nice, but I didn't ask for this. Things are bad and messy, not existential, well maybe for Trump it is. Things look worse than they are as we can see all of it. The frustrating thing is America is more than able to fix the vast majority of its problems, its not a question of resources. China is disturbingly opaque, but we can safely infer more aggressive, asinine the positive stories are, more leaks, the worse things are. I wonder why there is this sudden push to not waste food as a virtue which runs completely in the opposite direction to cultural expectations. There are multiple factors pointing to food insecurity. We have seen this before else where like the stock markets. Hmmm.

Australia's foreign policy, and has been since Howard is "We are friends with America. America is big and scary. So don't mess with us. Did I do good Mr American? Your boot is so tasty. Oh, by the way reffos out." Even now, ScoMo's push for an independent inquiry or whatever into COVID-19, that is causing so much "hurt feelings", is basically a way to follow behind and suck up to the US.

Being a close US ally does not equate to "licking boot." If anything Australia was rather flippant regarding China from an American perspective.

The executive has an outsize role in US politics from a public perspective. Especially overseas, you rarely hear about what the Congress is doing, it’s pretty much only ever Trump. Given he is clearly just flailing around trying to do whatever he can to increase his re-electability, I don’t see the US (through him) being able to provide a consistent narrative that will unite countries in an effort to push back. Sure, the gears of the US foreign relations will continue to turn but that’s not the same as a rallying call of leadership that I think’s necessary for dealing with this. I’ll concede I phrased it fairly poorly and made it sound like the US is worthless diplomatically. They’re absolutely not, but I don’t think they’re currently doing a great deal of leadership either.

The upshot is that China is an even worse clusterfuck domestically and Xi is a worse diplomat than Trump.

Exercise in how "I have nothing to hide" of tankies is, well, just do a rewatch of laowhy on youtube. You know, pro China mostly, fun bike and travel videos, not really having a problem with the "system" - just a foreigner doing harmless things. [time passes] Now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7CPqROtanA Guy with breaking voice sitting, completely paranoid and separated from family, in a HK park, reporting how he just made it across the border thanks to some lazy border office because he is actually being looked for in China by the military for trumped up charged of illegal journalism because he interviewed someone years back. And his friend is missing. Like, I feel sorry for this dude but also lmao. The whole thang is an immersive experience of why fascism is bad for you even if you aren't even fighting against the CCP. Someone should make like a supercut education video about this. Show it to tankies. "Am I safe in a fascist state if I don't really want to be a problem for them?"
