I know that wealthy people have the power to just move if they want to have more of a say in their government (or have the illusion of saying more by living in an autocracy that superficially agrees with them). Nobody likes living in an autocracy that is philosophically opposed to them. I don't really know how much that effects people who are just moving to take jobs where there's money though. I think the whole horrifying wildfires and constant droughts might make some people want to leave the state more. What's weird is that for a long while, I've felt like California is kind of a black hole for the entire entertainment industry. Anybody who gets some amount of success eventually has to move to California to be in range of other people in the industry to collaborate. I think Austin has a whole thing where they're trying to become its own little LA, I dunno if they've hit a critical mass for that. Other than that, maybe there's some element of just the branding and marketing of the state party so that all the conservatives (of which there are plenty in California) who move in are encouraged to be confident and boisterous while everybody else gets beaten down before they even get into the state so they're more likely to just not even try engaging with politics. The Texas Dems certainly don't project much confidence, and non-republican Texans are often all shy and ashamed of where they live.

They were bizarrely and unreasonably angry and cruel towards Princess Diana and now Meghan Markle. Like, the royal family doesn't meaningfully impact anyone's lives, but folks are so angry and racist. I get they're a big part of celebrity gossip, but you would think Meghan Markle had murdered the Queen the way they speak. I left England to escape the monarchy but you bastards just had it all set up here waiting for me. Royalty culture is something you should stay well clear of as it's creepy as hell. People keep pictures of the queen in their house and will toast to it. Christmas day has families loyally tuning in to hear the old lady ramble on about how wonderful England was this year and how all her loyal little subjects did just great. Markle makes a perfect Emmanuel Goldstein for the narrative.

The only real solution is to somehow crack the two-party system wide open so that people may find a new political freedom, but that's not very likely to happen. It's very very theoretically possible that the Republicans will gently caress up and circumstances will mobilize their opposition enough to disrupt the current autocratic single-party hegemony, and all of the people will come out of the woodwork and either it'll be the new awakening of politics in the state, or it'll all die down in a couple years as a new hegemony establishes itself. Also the Come and Take it flag is about lying about the size of your dick and the Alamo was a bunch of idiot dumbasses who died because they were morons, and both of them have as much bearing on modern Texas as Alexander the Great has on gyros.

Forseti posted:My biggest fear is that the most poo poo democrats and least poo poo republicans will form a giant centrist party and nobody else will have any power. Which great that the tea party psychos have no power but boo that the socialists have no power. That has been one of the game plans the Democrats have been trying for a while now. The secret twist is that pure centrism is a meaningless political stance that's incredibly hard to muster enthusiasm for in your voter base, because there's only so much hollow promises about nebulous economic improvement while everything stays the same can do for you. Also at the end of the day, wherever you plant your centrist flag will actually include some political stances that will eventually become non-centrist. It'll either decay into conservatism as the world around it moves on or it'll accidentally adopt to changing circumstances. The only time that that centrism can triumph on its own without piggybacking on something bigger than itself is when there's very obviously some radical movement that there's widespread resistance to, and even then it can be a longshot.

The Lib Dems however managed to achieve all their aims in 2010 by stealing a massive number of votes from young people and handing them to the Tories.
