Ummm how did i miss a new pandemic legacy?

I just watched the shut up and sit down review- how disease focused is this? Their review makes it seem like it’s got nothing to do with stopping disease at all and it’s about fighting commies. The people i played the last two with are annoying and will probably not like that as much.

Any spoiler free answers on that or impressions?

Edit: I’m a fool and realised this isn’t out yet I assumed from the review it was!

It went from announcement to reviews everywhere in like 2 weeks so It was kind of easy to miss.

Communism is a disease :colbert:

It's essentially Pandemic reskinned into the Cold War. Instead of viruses, you're trying to eradicate Commie Spy Bastards on the board.
You establish bases of operation around the world and then send out the Free Candy Vans to stuff spies into the back of them never to be seen again.

There's a spoiler-free demo up for TTS if you want to check it out and get a vibe for it.

I like it. I will probably grab it for my group, and a mate will look into Season 1 afterwards.

In fairness, the CIA is one of the most evil organizations on the planet, even if it's not like post cold war russia was great :v:

Yeah, even ignoring the tankies "hoorah, go America, yay CIA, gently caress those commie bastards" is a pretty questionable message in the year two-thousand and twenty. Hopefully it's a little more nuanced than that when you get into the meat.

E: I'm sure it will, given the designers...

I would assume that the game's setting was locked down before...*gestures broadly*, but releasing a board game in TYOOL 2020 where you play as the CIA to stop dastardly Commies from developing an engineered virus that will wipe out humanity is really spectacular.

To be fair Pandemic has already stepped outside the whole disease thing with Cthulhu, Rising Tide, and Fall of Rome. I imagine diseases eventually pop up, otherwise why would your occupation be doctors?

Theme or mechanic?

Check the SUSD review. Does a pretty good job of explaining what's different about it between the 3 seasons

It sounds like they went hard into the narrative idea with a reference book of story stuff that might not even be relevant to your game state. I also got the impression that it’s a lot more goofy to stay away from dealing with the realities of the CIA and their global actions. Sounds kinda bad.

Theme.

I'm very much not loving here for that theme.

Beware the Forest's Mushrooms
There is no way to make this point without some degree of oblique spoilers for previous Pandemic Legacy games.

Pandemic Legacy Seasons 1 and 2 spoilers follow: The narrative of Pandemic Legacy have dealt with trust, betrayal, authority, rebellion and going your own way to some degree or another. There is a reasonable chance that the starting status of CIA as good guy will not remain, especially considering that IIRC Quinns refers to this game as being full of twists and turns. I seriously doubt this is going to simply say, "Boy, squashing socialist revolution in foreign countries is just so keen! McCarthy did nothing wrong!" However, as a piece of American media, there is a potential for a critical view being cast in the light of singular bad actors rather than corrupt systems. Obviously that would be a bummer. However, the two previous games had very few individual characters that have narrative significance as opposed to organizations, so I think the chances of them trying to pin it on David Badguy is lower than in some other pieces of media. I think the most likely outcome is it is a piece of narrative that meant to be a fun adventure without anything to actually say about its subject matter. I guess it remains to be seeing if that's an issue for a board game in 2020.

The moment I put one game into another game's box is the moment that game disappears from my consciousness. I have to just stare at my wall of games to remember what I have and what I want to play. Do you label the boxes to remind yourselves what's inside?

Expansion content goes into the base box if it fits. Even better if everything goes into the smaller expansion box.

When the expansion comes out you’ll have to cut the side off of that box and glue it to the side of another slightly larger box. Then you’ll share(read:unleash) an image of that horrific creation causing half the thread to experience unending night terrors and the other half to spontaneously combust. You’ll regret it then!

I was turned off by the Pandemic S0 theme, but the SUSD people are far left, and they had nothing but praise for the story. They don't even mention that the CIA are evil. I'm taking this as implicit approval for the direction the story goes.

Then again, they tend to take games in the spirit the game was made, and if the game is being cavalier about a historical evil (Nixon, the Whitechapel murders, the CIA when they talked about that social deduction game, and so on) then they often won't address it. It's possible that Panlegseas0 has such a ridiculous take that the historical context ends up feeling irrelevant. Like, if KGB agents are riding around in blimps shaped like Lenin's head in February and all of the characters have unlocked magical wizard spells by April, I'm probably going to give the game a pass.

Smartphone Inc seems cool.

Oh its apparently got big replayability issues.

Oh they've added more stuff in an expansion.

Oh the expansion won't fit in the base box because it includes a new board.

Oh it's not too hard to find a copy from the recent KS where it's all packed into one box.

Oh that box is massive (but somehow also too small) and people are really struggling to repack and organise stuff without binning the included player trays/boxes.

If you're having difficulty boxing Smartphone Inc 2.0 then you'll probably have difficulty playing the game.

E: Here's how you do it.

Fig. 1 All player pieces in their trays including pads on top. Hard Mode pads top right, Improvements around the top left and left edges. Technologies and Directives in the Hipster CEO box. Player screens on top. The Steve board also goes on top of the player screens - I removed it for clarity.

Fig. 2 Adding rulebooks, Steve board, and a bag of cardboard counters and Mini Improvements at top left.

Fig. 3 Full board, 2-3 player board and score tracker (underneath) completes storage.

As you can see, there's still a good 1cm of air at the top of the box even after everything is packed.

Cut the titles off all the boxes you migrated from, and then just bluetac them to whatever box they're currently in.

I saw some home decoration/improvement magazine suggest storing all of your games in the plastic bag hangers like libraries use sometimes. Just dump each game into each bag, and then hang them up in a closet. Reach in and push them around to find the one you want to play.

Then take the clothes that were hanging in the closet, fold them, and put them in the game boxes on your shelf.
