Correct, the original SVX transmissions were a weak point - my understanding is that they were from the Subaru parts bin and not designed for the weight of the porky SVX (strike one), and on top of that, tuned for "soft" shifts, which turned the internal heat up to eleven and burned them up. The fix for that was to swap in 4.44 transmissions from the Outback which were able to handle the load better. In fact, the main reason I bought this car was because it had some kind of fancy high-dollar "built" 4.44 transmission in it, although I don't remember the details.

I thought of using an ozone machine, but I'm also trying to eliminate mold growth / spores rather than just the smell. I fear just attacking the smell won't get to the root cause. That said, I'd be curious to know if those cheap >$100 ozone generators on Amazon are worth anything at all, or if they're just junk.

From what I've read, ozone kills mold and mold spores, too. My Passat was flooded in the interior and had mold on door panels. Ozoned the poo poo out of it and it has the same crayon-smell that VWs of that vintage had originally. I got mine from a small company called Forever Ozone when they sold on Amazon for $50. It's held up great, but I can't find a record of the size. They still do direct web sales: https://foreverozone.com/product-category/air-ozone-generators/

I have a highly rated $50-60 lightning deal ozone generator and it works perfectly and is rated for like 10k hours before you even change the ozone plates. Yes they work.

It is: Airthereal MA5000 Commercial Generator (currently $73, replacement parts readily available)

Huh, didn't realize that these actually killed the microorganisms / spores and what not along with the smell. Gonna have to read up on this a bit, but it looks like this may be the best way to do it, and also kill all the spiders and other things in there at the same time.

Thank you both for the recommendations! I've actually got a few uses for something like this, so this is the extra push I need to actually pull the trigger on one. A lot of the interior surfaces on this car are suede (for Reasons), so it'll be nice to hopefully eradicate the mold without having to actually scrub it out and probably destroy the suede in the process.

Definitely worth having an ozone generator just know it could take multiple treatments. Hell let that baby crank multiple hours the first time.

Pleasantly surprised latest eBay buy some might know all but the most expensive above chrome books are sold out and while I won a computer store, I dont keep computers at the house. But kids now need them for keeping up with class assignments and scores two in the box Samsung’s that were advertised as locked and managed for $40 each. Both look brand new and literally held 4 keys down and simply powerwashed them. Nice.

I got an ozone generator that’s basically just a power supply and a plate, works great but no fan means I have the car’s climate control blowing on recirc/high when it’s running. Which is a good idea anyway to get anything in the vents, also works for cars with musty AC smells.

The ozone generator will kill anything organic in the car. Including your bod, so let it air out when you’re done. I’d follow it up with a good steaming and a shop vac and then some 303.

Yeah don't gently caress with ozone. There's a reason it works so well, and it's not because it's benign.
That "good smell" is your mucus membranes literally melting.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK430751/

quote:

The exact risk of ozone toxicity is difficult to determine due to many factors. One large study suggested that a 10 ppb increase in ozone was associated with a 0.52% risk of non-injury-related daily mortality in that community the following week. Additionally, the same increase of environmental ozone may cause a 0.64% increase in mortality due to cardiovascular or respiratory causes.

Ozone is cool and good just don't be an idiot and breathe it in. Allow for proper ventilation like you would any other dangerous chemical and never occupy a space with an active ozone generator.

I just ordered this ozone generator, mainly because I like the adjustable output and the digital timer - plus, there's an electronic 5 sec delay between hitting the go button and ozone coming out, so you don't get a nice blast of it in the face before you're able to gtfo. Since I'm sure there's mustiness / mold in the climate control system along with everything else, I was going to run it on recirc off a charger while the OG was running inside. I haven't yet tested the climate control system - hopefully no mice have made nests in it. It was pouring rain all day today, so I wasn't really able to go out and poke at it some more.

That steamer looks like a nice-to-have, but between the OG and the power washer I bought off Woot the other day I'm about at my self-imposed limit for toy spending this month. I think once the car is closer to being driveable, I'll probably get that (or something similar) and try to give it a more thorough cleaning. I need something like that for my van too, so it's def on the wish list. Heads up, for anyone needing a battery, Pep Boys is currently offering a pretty solid 25% off when purchased on the web for in-store installation or pickup, although I couldn't find an expiration date for the promotion. So far, (with the promo) they are at the cheapest price point for a solid battery with a decent warranty (not some ValuCraft 3 month warranty bullshit) that I've been able to find. I'm not at the point where I need the battery yet, but will kick myself if the promo expires before I'm ready to grab it.

I have a cheapo ozone generator, and it works well. The way I used it on the car was some dryer vent hose in through an open window with cardboard taped around to seal the gap, and the generator itself sat on the roof, so it's drawing in fresh air to produce the ozone.

They actually do trip properly (don't ask), and the breakers are screwed solidly to substantial buss bars. The only ones I ve had fail were the two 30A double-poles. In less depressing news, but still UK related: since it was 104 degF outside on Sunday, I stayed inside and built a thing:

I've had the kit for a couple years. Finally decided o spend the time on it. Took a couple hours of fiddly snipping and bending, but went together well, and is solid when finished.

Printing and etching is pretty good:

That sign panel is about 1/4" (6mm) wide, and is mostly readable.

I did do some stuff out in the garage on Saturday, which was also* 104 degF, but was just done with that on Sunday.
Considering dropping $90 for this 60" fan for the garage.
I have two smaller (~48") ceiling fans out there now, but they are older and slow, and don't move much air. This thing is supposed to move 9630 CFM!

edit: I've mentioned that I have a few hot wheels, models, and diecasts, and have shown a few pics, but I don't think I've shown them all together. So here's a panorama of two walls of my office:

Saw a dude who did that on Instructables or something. Pretty neat. Only thing to be aware of is that it's not a very big shed. :) Big enough for a push lawnmower with the handlebars folded, and some other yard tools, though.
It's also fairly involved, since it's a pretty complex structure. And you have to choose which one you want, since it varies from season to season... The newest one is the largest, BTW. I would be lying if I said I didn't want one myself.

He does, but he doesn't have the best BBQ in Austin. It's good, very good BBQ, but not worth waiting in line for several hours. IMO Terry Black's is almost as good, Valentina's puts a real nice Tex-Mex twist on it. You can get Black's sauce in a lot of places; Valentina's stuff isn't sold in stores though.

Then you have Stubb's - it's decent, not fantastic, but not bad either. You eat there before live music - they own a prime piece of downtown real estate with an outdoor music venue behind the restaurant (with 3 or 4 bars out there), plus they host small shows in their basement. Well, did, before 'rona. Their outdoor venue is by far one of my favorites. Sidenote: Mr Stubb (RIP) sold the rights to bottle and sell his BBQ sauce to some small company years ago, on a handshake deal. McCormick bought that company, and there's been legal battles for several years over the Stubb family using the Stubb's name for the original restaurant. :fuckoff: Here's a 3 year old article about it; Stubb's (the restaurant/venue) has yet to change their name. I seem to remember a followup lawsuit, but I'm too tired to try to find anything about it right now.

It's simply more of a "I'm used to my phone responding instantly" thing for me, especially when I can get a 1-2 year old flagship phone for half (sometimes less) of what it originally sold for by going for the "good" condition ones on Swappa (so long as they're not Samsung, holy gently caress those things REALLY hold their value). The screen burn is getting to me a bit, otherwise I'd just keep it for another year. I wouldn't mind a better camera either, though having a port of the Pixel camera app helps IMMENSELY.

I have 128GB built into the phone, storage isn't an issue at all. We also have good wifi at work; almost all of my music and podcast listening happens at work. I have enough data stashed that I don't even bother having Pocket Casts download anything unless I know I'm going to be in a place without a signal (wifi or cellular) - my plan has 6GB a month, my stash is maxed out at something like 25GB. Why yes, I am on an ancient plan, why do you ask? :v:

I was going to say - there are some parts of the US where you'll be hard pressed to avoid an HOA.

From my experience, if you get into an HOA where most of your neighbors have lived there for a long time, the worse the HOA is going to be. In my HOA (warehouses converted to lofts about 15 years ago), the original owners are the most likely to be a Karen or Richard because they think firsties give them more rights. Everybody else is pretty chill and/or reasonable.
