There was a guy in this thread not a month ago doing the whole "well technically those people weren't killed in Tienanmen square" thing. As if it makes any difference at all where exactly people got gunned down. And there's a lot of that "well this is not x because according to definition y of x that we are clearly not using" stuff, like that arguing to make the wrong right by being dishonest kind of thing. But there's a lot of different ways to be a tankie so nailing down a definition for "tankie" is like nailing down a definition for "nerd", you kinda just know it when you see it.

Tankies are people defending a regime for domatic reasons, where their defense concludes that the regime did not do anything wrong or could not have reasonably done anything different, even if such an option exists. We can understand left-wing Tankies by understanding their outlook coming from Marxism. Their prior is the reasonable assumption that capitalist society is an iron cage in which systemic pressure makes gradual (in particular, ethically "clean") change impossible. The enemy, "capitalism" - and this I need to stress - is a system. A system with everyone in it, including the Tankie. Everyone is inherently part of what needs to be destroyed, and the fight against a system can not take into account the morality of what happens to individuals. It is antithetical to the dogma to even consider abhorrent acts as acts against individuals, because in Marxism system and individual are causally separated by history ('time') and it would be unclear whether acts that are individually wrong would not be, or especially be, collectively good. On the grand scale, abolition of capitalism is believed to be the most important goal of humanity that will, eventually, save millions or billions of lives. Any agent that works towards that goal, including any country following that dogma or simply existing as a non-capitalist entity, is by definition good. For the Tankie, it is entirely inconsequential if thousands or even millions of people get genocided or crushed by tanks in China or elsewhere. These actions are ultimately necessary because a communist country or society is in a constant state of war against capitalism as a system. Hence, acts need not even be promoting communism to be justified, it is sufficient that an act strengthens the country in any way for it to be good. It does not matter whether China is de-facto communist or capitalist, as China is one of the few entities that follow the correct dogma. By that fact alone, China rages a war against capitalism. Tankies will grumble about the fact that China is not really communist, but that doesn't change their allegiance to China. China itself declares itself anti capitalist, so it being a capitalist country is nothing but another necessary act of defense against the systemic war that the capitalist system inherently wages against humanity. So, for the Uighur genocide, Tankies will first deny that it is a genocide and claim it's a "police action" that is slightly too "harsh" (cf. my recent probation in the bad thread). Then, however, they will also say that it is necessary, justified or at least reasonable given the circumstances (the implication here is usually that dirty Muslims just can't help themselves doing terrorism because they are Muslims). However, this is all just window dressing. Tankies genuinely believe that such acts are not only necessary, but they are in fact good. There is no alternatively to deliver humanity to its salvation. Therefore, it's not really productive to argue with Tankies because no matter how the discussion goes, the priors are too different. Appealing to the presence of any amount of misery and death is useless. The Tankie finds these events regrettable, but also necessary and by that they are in fact good. You will be fed excuses because the Tankie knows you do not yet share this outlook on things, but internally the Tankie could not care less about who gets got where if it helps the fight against the capitalist system. Of course it's been ages, and it was so minor etc. But I am curious. Was there any follow up on this bloke and his parents once they returned home to China? Did they just go back to ordinary life after their tantrum and pissbaby behaviour caused an international incident? Coz if I remember the story rightly, they curtailed their entire holiday because of this and flew straight home. Wasting a bucket of money, and missing out on the remainder of their vacation time.
