Closed toe doesn't seem like a useful standard? My steel toes saved my actual toes once or twice while backing up the pallet jack etc, but some sneakers or whatever would qualify as "closed toe" absolutely would not have made any difference whatsoever. At that point just wear sandals.

e: I understand that there's a very slight protective effect but seriously, people are gonna come to work with the lightest "closed toe" shoe they can find if that's the only guideline you give them.

The requirements appear to scale by environmental risk.

OSHA is fine with open-toed shoes in offices:

Let me tell you about the time I encountered a scoop tram driver underground (I'm a mine safety supervisor) wearing goddamned flip flops while driving.

He also had music blaring in his cab. In an underground construction projection. With a dozen other scoops sharing the same drifts.

The stupidest part is he sure as hell didn't come underground that way. Flip flops in the cage would mean crushed toes. He had boots hidden away somewhere that he pretended not to have. Someone got a few unpaid days.

It was in the context of working in a call centre. You don't need crush protection from a dropped call.

Croc co. made a version of their product without holes in the top so that nurses could wear them on the job. Nurses were one of their big demographics, maybe still are.

My nurse partner says yes. Plus they provide enough ventilation for when you have to wear surgical booties all shift.

I don't get people who won't wear their safety footwear. Closed, steel-toed, puncture-proof and slip-resistant sole. Yeah, your feet will feel like minced meat the first week, but after that you get used to it. I don't wear anything but that sort of footwear, even in my spare time.

If your safety footwear isn't comfortable to wear, you're wearing the wrong safety footwear.

This. The safety footwear my work provides are some of the most comfortable shoes I have. Paired with the right socks and insoles they are great.
