In retrospect that makes more sense and it would be awkward to tour with either old songs written with a bass and no player or have a bass player and newer songs just have them stand around. Their other albums they had a bass band member which is what made me question it so now I am wondering how often it happens and I just didn't notice. I didn't notice Blind Guardian either for example. I guess I wouldn't without seeing them live a couple times.

There is bass on every Blind Guardian album and they tour with a bass player. Nobody is just standing around ever. But there is no official Blind Guardian bassist. I don't know why that is, because the touring guys also play on the albums, going by Metal-Archives credits, but my guess is they are not involved with the creative process and thus the band does not consider them official members.

With Unleash the Archers it looks like they've just cycled through a lot of guys for whatever reason. Nobody is credited for bass on the new album at all so maybe they did just drop it entirely (I haven't listened to check). It's not unheard of in metal to not have bass, but it's usually something you see in a genre like grindcore, not power metal.

Powerwolf has never had a bass player AFAIK. On albums one of the guitarists lays down the tracks, and live they use a backing track. It seems to work pretty well.

Hi thread

Short time lurker / first time poster, looking for some recommendations.

I find metal in general "ok", though I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the stuff that has been recommended here over the last bunch of pages. I don't min d a bit of growly vocals but prefer "normal" singing in general. Rhapsody / Rhapsody of Fire are just about my favourite band, and I also really like Unleash the Archers and early Dragonforce (before the line-up change). Also like Blood Stain Child and Bolt Thrower for example (although it's hard to explain why I like Bolt Thrower given what I said earlier), and Gloryhammer are ok.

I don't particularly like Blind Guardian, Turisas or Amon Amarth, as examples. I'm struggling to find other bands that are similar to the ones I like, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hmm, if you like fast power-y stuff, listen to Silence by Sonata Arctica. That's a good-un. Also, an album that really grabbed me before I knew much about metal was 'Alien' by Strapping Young Lad. That's a real experience...And you know what, Slipknot. I still enjoy them from time to time :)

Check out Pallbearer, they are doom (leaning prog) with clean vocals. One of my favorite bands. Mastodon as well has a lot of clean vocals. What about older stuff like Judas Priest?

I’m having trouble thinking of other trad and power metal bands that meet your requests, I guess I would say just listen to more Death because death rules and chucks vocals aren’t really that “growly”

If you like Blood Stain Child, you will probably find a Children of Bodom album you'll enjoy. If you like BSC's album Eclipse specifically, Amaranthe might also do the trick. If you like Rhapsody for the melodramatic vocals and nerd lyrics, give early Nightwish (and Dio, as mentioned) a try.
