Ah yes, the weight scapegoat! My lovely FNP primary care was telling me my weight was the sole cause of my exhaustion, constantly getting sick, mood swings... even after I begged for an immunoglobulin test and it was hella hosed up she was still like, yer fat

8 months after getting that copper IUD out and no more pain, lost 40 pounds (210 to 170) mood way better, her assistant called after the appointment to be like "she says you need to lose weight"

bloodchat: light spotting and spent yesterday enjoying a beer and ibuprofen to offset the fact an invisible mule kicked my lower back. I still say it makes no evolutionary sense to be in pain and upset each month, clearly bears are already attracted, we shouldn't want to fight them as well

I'm kind of surprised that I've never run into any "all of your problems will be fixed if you lose weight" doctors. That said, I have never had a checkup with a male doctor, which could be a factor. I'm 5'6" and 240 pounds and I could obviously stand to lose a CONSIDERABLE amount of weight, but all my vitals are always normal whenever I get a physical, and no one has ever given me poo poo about it.

Everyone's horror stories make me happy I went with (certified nurse) midwives for birth and then kept going to them for annuals and the like. Much less lovely attitudes toward women's health in general, at least at this clinic. Also, no dudes poking at me, which is nice.

Got Nexplanon put in today, hello to like 3 months of bleeding/spotting apparently.

same here, for the most part. my primary has mentioned weight loss almost in passing. i have no health issues typically associated with it. i do have diagnosed high blood pressure, but they based that on a reading taken at my pre-op appointment for upcoming brain surgery so i disagree

I’m pretty fortunate in that my gp’s a lady, and listens to me reasonably well; nowadays my mother politely insists on her doctors also being ladies, whenever it’s feasible. She said it feels less awkward to convey her older-lady issues to a lady than to a dude, who’s likelier than not to be younger than she is, and I can’t find fault with that logic myself. Goodness knows she’s suffered enough frustration in dealing with medical specialists (like surgeons) who were dudes and also rude, arrogant, negligent, judgmental bellends, both in her parents’ final years (she was their caregiver) and in dealing with her own health issues (caregiving is demanding work, as I’m sure you’re all aware)

on the bright side, from what she’s told me about them, her last two therapists were pretty great older guys whose counsel helped her out quite a bit :unsmith:

e: which reminds me that I should probably have brought up renewing my prescription for the ring at my last checkup, but the monthly release of the bloodgates is still fairly benign as is, and between the virus and the everything else I don’t really expect to be putting it to use for its primary purpose anytime soon, so I’m not inclined to rush out for it :v:

I totally get this logic. Like, I feel like as much shared experience as feasible between you and a gp or something like an obgyn can only be good. I think it brings more compassion and better understanding to the patient-doctor relationship. Less potential for the dismissive BS too I think.

The gyno who took my period issues seriously was male but he was definitely an outlier. I also tend to request female doctors and therapists because there's a lot of poo poo I am really not comfortable talking about in a medical or theraputic context with a man. I'm shocked that more women aren't hard "no male doctors" whenever the option is available. My mom started me off that way and while all medical professionals are a roulette of being taken seriously or getting shrugged off, I feel the odds are better if I start off with someone who has at least suffered some of the same poo poo I have.

I get antsy about it because some women (albeit probably not gynos, one would hope) say things like "you're exaggerating how much your period hurts, it's just a dull ache" based on their own experiences

but then, I've also got a gender thing and for relatability purposes would rather go to a trans guy gyno, if they were readily available

I’ve had better experiences with women doctors however I’ve still also had lovely experiences with women doctors, sometimes weight things, sometimes not. I’m 5 4 and have hit 250 at the heaviest. It’s not that I don’t think weight doesn’t contribute to some issues, but I’m doubtful that it contributes to every issue I’ve ever had or an immediate thing to bring up when I’m there for like, my hosed up ear. It’s the “this is a Wendy’s drive thru” of my medical experiences.

Still don’t have my little sister beat. She always had this lump on the side of her face near her jawbone, and kept telling doctors “hi what is this” and brushed off as nothing since High School. Last year at 24, she finally meets with a new doctor who is a black woman. She gets the lump checked out as she’s had a million times prior, tests, etc and gets an immediate “you are getting scheduled for surgery loving yesterday”. It was TWO benign tumors that have a super higher risk of growing malignant the longer they stay and she’s had them for about a decade so uhhh yeah get those suckers out. Apparently they’re also rare for younger people to get as well. Yippee.

They’re out (though thank you COVID for delaying the surgery), and she’s doing much better and has a badass scar. It also made me quit smoking cigarettes for good because if my bonkers healthy sister can be dealing with this perhaps fat schmuck older sister shouldn’t be summoning the cancer gods because she’s a wee bit stressed.

Let's get clean and smart

When I got my IUD in order to try getting pregnant we (my husband and I, it was on the list of stuff to ask the doctor) asked if I should lose weight before getting pregnant. I was like 200ish pounds at the time, 5'6'', and the doctor sized me up and said "nah". I ended up getting Gestational Diabetes in the 5th month of pregnancy though, which to be fair can happen to anyone but being overweight doesn't help your odds.

I managed it very well through diet, never needed insulin or anything, but when Ralph Jr was past his due date they induced me, which probably made the labor longer than it would have been if we hadn't induced. He ended up being under the 4 kilo target - that's what they worry about when you got the GD, that your kid will be too big - so it all worked out happily for us. There can be some extremely dangerous and even life-threatening complications from GD, so it isn't something to be taken lightly. Fortunately it can be managed through diet a lot of the time.

Each year now I have to go and get screen for diabetes because having GD increases your odds of developing regular diabetes. I've been fine since, although I haven't lost any weight since having the baby. Haven't gained much though, so that's a win, I'm at 210 now. I exercise each day and don't eat much refined flour, which is what my GD specialist said is more statistically relevant for not developing diabetes than just being overweight. Still though, it's something I worry about, and if I get pregnant again I will almost certainly have GD again.

Anyway I'm ovulating right now and my Ps a bit more WA than usual during the day. I didn't wear a pad yesterday and my undies got wet and as a result I got a welty blister where my leg meets my labia. Wearing a pad today. Ugh, if it isn't blood it's just regular discharge.

Gotcha, the pic I have is from Spring and you can clearly see one (and I saw them in Dec when she visited) but I think they became more apparent over time, one way more visible than the other. I know when I first saw them in Dec one was super visible, in that area where the jawbone and the ear meet at the neck.

Regardless if she answers (there’s like 9 hr diff) I’ll post it here. And yeah, no matter what hassle and rough up a drat doctor, even if it’s nothing at least you know fully.

My previous GP was a woman and I was like, uh, I think 170, 5 foot 9, and she kept riding me about losing weight and constantly asking me about my diet and such. My husband is easily 200 pounds overweight, he had the same doctor, and she never said a loving word about it. the hell????

I like my new doctor more, she is also a woman, she doesn't obsess over my weight. She's more worried about my sleep habits, because sleep is important.

I also had to explain to a female doctor once what vaginismus is. What in the gently caress

I find it easier to intimidate men into giving me what I want, in the "fine take your lousy scrip for 5 Ativan that you need to get on a plane, you crazy bitch, just get outta here" sense, although they are worse listeners overall.

I also find it easier to receive emotionally distressing medical information from a man because it's easier for me to control my emotions around men because obviously I've been socialized to do that.

That said, I don't feel that male doctors listen AT ALL and I have had to have emergency surgery twice as a result of extremely poor diagnoses by male doctors.

Basically, I wish elise the great was my doc.

e: Oh, and I've never had a female doctor tell me to lose weight. Interestingly. I have been told with a straight face that all I need to do to solve the back pain that has almost immobilized me permanently is to "lose three kilos" which...that's an odd number? And...what? "Lose 6.6 pounds EXACTLY and your ability to walk like an anatomically modern human shall be restored!" Man, eat poo poo.

My sister answered her tumor questions, which aaAAAAAA I didn’t know she had a bonkers biopsy now I feel guilty for hucking an ice laden snowball at her as an angry nine year old

quote:

They were hard lumps (which is a good thing), but they didn’t move around that much. They were attached to my parotid gland (salivary gland) so they really didn’t move.

My one of my tumors we’re extremely visible from the surface. To a point in which some people asked about them. The other one was deeper in my neck

I first had a regular old ultrasound just to confirm that masses were there. Unfortunately just by an ultrasound they can’t fully diagnose you, just confirm that “something” is there. Then I had a core needle biopsy. Don’t google it, it’s basically someone lodging a tube thru the tumor to get a core chunk out of it. it’s considered to be “minimally” invasive, which just means they don’t need to put you under, but it is pretty scary an uncomfortable.

I had a pleomorphic adenoma which required a
Parotidectomy. My type of tumors are common in folks 65+, are mostly harmless if your 85+. But if you are young like me they are pretty serious because that have a tendency of undergoing a malignant transformation (starting out benign turning to cancer). My oncologist said they was a 100% I would have cancer by 35. So in young folks they’re essentially ticking time bombs.

At the absolute very least, have your friend get an ultrasound. It will provide proof that something is in fact there. And if the doc is saying “if it doesn’t hurt, don’t worry about it.” That’s completely bull. Hurt shouldn’t be the main cause for concern. Mine didn’t hurt one bit, and I swear to god the only reason I got it checked out because my black doctor felt like something was off and she didn’t trust the white folks I saw before. She wanted to investigate herself. Then ta-da she was right and racism in the medical industry is hella pervasive.

Hope this helps

I've also been getting pains in my lower abdomen for a good year now and no ultrasounds or checks have found the cause. The next step is laparoscopy but I gotta lose weight before they can do that.

Not alternating, but they vary wildly in cramping pain. I thought it might have something to do with my iron levels- without actually tracking properly, if I've been remembering to take iron more frequently the pain seems to be less.
