Eh, the difference is actually how watered down the booze gets from the ice and it does affect flavor. You only really care if you were like some snobby cocktail aficionado purist but that is really no different from any other kind of aficionado like for wine and the glass you use, cigars and how you cut and light it, or coffee and how you grind and pour it.

I knew about the shaking cracking up the ice diluting the drink and always just thought it was intentional. So it would look like he's relaxing and having a good time but he's actually drinking vodka flavored water and staying sharp.

The ice barely dilutes it, you still get loving poo poo faced. The shaking does make it ice cold though, which is great.

How drunk you get depends on the total amount of alcohol, not on how diluted it is. The best theory I've heard is that Ian Fleming enjoyed watching female bartenders shake martinis, but I can't find anything online to corroborate that.

All said and done, the amount that your martini gets diluted is just barely enough to make it not qualify as straight vodka, and that's the only reason you even bother...I'm not a total degenerate.

FDR had a silver shaker he used to make martinis in for people he hung out with. I don't give a poo poo about the fictional sex and violence man but I support drinking martinis the FDR way.

My knowledge of bars in the time I'm assuming Fleming boozed in comes entirely from reading massive amounts of crime fiction but I don't think I remember any women bartenders.

It's a class distinction. By asking for a shaken martini James Bond establishes himself as a member of the working class to the British public

For a movie that actually uses dilution and staying sharp as a plot point, may I recommend The Sting. https://www.shmoop.com/the-sting/gin-symbol.html Anyway as for whether shaking gets it colder faster, I'd say it probably does, but I did get into a conversation once with a bartender at a nerdy cocktail bar in Jackson WY who told me that once he was asked by a customer to make his martini as cold as it was humanly possible to make it. He said he stirred it for near on 30 minutes, but it was worth it because it got it down to sub-freezing temperatures and the customer tipped well for it. Course now I'm thinking about how much ice he must have gone through in that half hour lool
