If someone else is that thirsty you're not gonna be able to buy that car right.

It sucks, but it is what is is unless you want to spend way too much.

That night we performed the rite and opened the gate.
Halfway through, I went to fix us both a coke float.
By the time I got back, he'd gone insane.
Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

Cue some guy bitching on a forum in a few weeks about buying a 993 with a ton of issues and being mocked for not getting a PPI.

To be fair, if I was going to risk buying a Porsche without PPI, it would be a 993 that's obviously been babied the way this one has. 996 and 997.1 heck no

When I was 996TT shopping I found a car and had a PPI set up for it. The seller messaged me the day before saying he sold it on ebay.

Although I’m still butt hurt over the guy selling it literally the day before the PPI. Not sure I’d want to buy a car across the country without one/seeing it.

Yeah still considering it, but I think my heart still wants something less practical/driveable. I’ve been getting jealous of all the old air cooled cars I’ve been seeing around the neighborhood.

This is the twin of the car: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-porsche-911-46/

But paying 70-80k for a base 993 seems bonkers, although it is a garage queen.

Yup.

I'm looking at a few Arena Red 993s and maybe an Aventurine green one. I think that's what I'm shooting for, especially since a 993 was my dream car at 12.

Got a line on an affordable-ish 2011 GT3 RS with an annoying DME report:

Stage 1: 435 at 289 hours
Stage 2: 95 at 285 hours
Stage 3: 21 at 285 hours
Stage 4: 6 at 285 hours
Stage 5: 0
Stage 6: 0

Currently 562 hours on the engine. Seller makes the argument that if the engine hasn't blown up in the 270+ hours since the over-rev event, it is unlikely to do so because of this.

Haven't done a PPI yet, but would this be an automatic disqualifier?

That looks like a single event that was almost instantaneous. I'd use it as leverage against the seller, then never worry about it again.

Edit: Example with a way worse report. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-gt3-forum/862899-2011-gt3rs-dme-report-troubling.html

270+ hours should be fine. Still use it to beat him up on the price, since it’ll come up when you sell it.

Agreed. That was babby's first (possibly only) track day.

E: just to make sure you know, the total combined time of range 2-4 events is well under one second. I didn't bother looking up the ranges to do the math.....it's that far under. As I recall, range 3 on that car should be like 360 ignitions per second.

All ranges are "exceeded", so 1 would still be above the limiter.

Generally you’ll get a range 1 by bouncing off the limiter. 2s and above are “true” over revs. 5/6s are the really scary ones.

I’ll try to have them tomorrow, serviced by Lufteknic in Richmond, VA during prior ownership. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to vouch for the car as well.

But you got to work on that offer, otherwise the discussion kind of is pointless

Was considering looking at this 911 https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/austin-1999-porsche-911-carrera-4-ims/7177566016.html

A couple warning flags though:

quote:

Runs and drives good, to make it perfect it needs a couple of fixes:

* Engine is wet. Needs valve cover gasket replaced.
* Right bank of engine is running rich. Possible valve or lifter issue.
* A little TLC to the engine will give you 30k more miles of classic Porsche bliss

These can't be easy or cheap fixes.

That thing isn't really all that cheap. Certainly not for that level of damage.

It needs $6k in engine work and brakes alone. Potentially more.

Then it needs an unknown amount of bodywork and a $4k respray.

So by the time you're done you've spent at least $25k on a car that's gonna be worth $20k on a good day due to the body damage, and will never be truly right again. And could have just spent $25k or less on any number of other 35-50k mile C4s that haven't been hit, repsrayed and left to leak all over the place.
