I always thought the “shaken, not stirred” thing was just a reference to Bond’s own attitude towards the poo poo he deals with on the job. That is, no matter how bad or hosed up things might be, he’s only ever shaken up by them, not stirred

Shaken and stirred drinks taste different. It's not that complicated. Shaken drinks end up more aerated and with tiny slivers of ice in them, stirred drinks are just cold.

counterpoint: all slurpie machines stir, they do not shake, and they are aerated ice chunks, and they even count as alcoholic once I dump the contents of my tertiary flask into one checkmate & king me

When you serve wine at room temperature without letting people see it, most of us can't reliably distinguish between reds and whites. I'm skeptical that shaken and stirred drinks actually taste any different.

They at least match stuff from the story. Compare the Ballantine first authorized US paperback: J.R.R.Tolkien posted:What has it got to do with the story? Where is this place? Why emus? And what is the thing in the foreground with pink bulbs?

Go write your prequel poetry book. Make sure to have a bigger Shelob and badder Sauron to inspire Peter Jackson to make his prequel into a 12 hour trilogy butt-numb-a-thon.

You lack knowledge or expertise on a subject, misquote a debunked study you half-remember, assume that everyone else is as uninformed as you are, and assert that any pretense of knowledge is in fact lies. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

The claim is due to The Red and the White, which describes an experiment carried out at UC Davis that found those results: quote:Because, as best I can remember, it was from Bruce or one of his acquaintances in the Napa Valley that I first heard about the color test given at the University of California at Davis, whose Department of Viticulture and Enology is renowned in the wine world. I got the impression that the Test was often given to visitors from the wine industry, but since this was about twenty years ago, such details are hazy. I was definitely told, though, that the folks at Davis poured wine that was at room temperature into black glasses—thus removing the temperature and color cues that are a large part of what people assume is taste—and that the tasters often couldn't tell red wine from white. It's definitely true that people can't reliably distinguish between wines as well as they think they can. See Wine-tasting: it's junk science for a survey of some recent research in that area. Given that, I stand by my claim that the typical person will be unable to distinguish shaken and stirred drinks.

A stirred daiquiri or cosmopolitan or whiskey sour is loving disgusting, and it's immediately apparent to anyone who's ever had a cocktail before. Do you not drink cocktails ever? This is loving crazy to me dude, I'm a career bartender so it's like if you said to a car mechanic that there's no point in changing your oil, it's always fine and no one except professional racecar drivers would ever notice if you never changed your oil.

Luckily it’s only the belief that a fictional character can’t tell the difference between his preferred method of imbibing and a different method. Surely this fictional character has wrong opinions that science doesn’t support. I applaud your critical rigor. You have solved the Bond Conundrum and have certainly shut up anyone with any modicum of training or interest in the practice of tasting. Thank you for doing this wonderful service, and in no less auspicious a locus than the Funny Pictures Thread. There's only one way to solve this. I'm going to need a hotel room for the weekend, a few bottles of liquor, a shaker, some swizzle sticks, some mixers, and maybe an escort or two. I'll let you guys know the results.
