i really liked playing orks but burned out because the amount of units was overwhelming. whats a good low-unit army for a beginnerish player (not since 2009 so i think 6th?)? i like chaos marines a lot aesthetically. id be okay with normal space marines too

Custodes for fewer models. Necrons are easy to paint to a battle standard level but a high model count. Marines are also easy to paint to an acceptable level and not very high model count.
Can also make very specialist lists like eldar wraith hosts with not very many models. Lots of vanguard lists that can be made for armies with lower model count. Like for sister's , one unit of 5 troops and then 9 Mortifiers and 9 Pentient engines :)

I watched a great video on speedpainting Marines last night:

I think the easiest army to paint to battle-ready is Tyranids. Everything's a blob, who cares if you mess up, that's just a random mutation on its gun arm or whatever. I've heard they're not even as horde-heavy in 9th as they used to be. It's still a lot of models, but not as much? I haven't played 9th obviously, I've just heard that the masses of Genestealers and Termagants aren't a thing anymore.

i'll say, painting nid hordes is so much more satisfying than orks. you have total freedom in the color scheme and unlike the boyz sculpts gaunts/gants/genes have fewer, bolder details. part of the hassle for boyz is the dumb chestplates sort of meshing with the shirts, the dozens of belts and buckles and such--nids don't have any of that. strong rec!

interesting. i didnt really think too much of tyranids last time i was into this so im looking a bit closer. the whole dynamic with genestealers seems cool.

what are custodians i cant find a start collecting set with them is that like a hyperspecific one? sound like janitors or financial advisors IMO

Yeah, every time you have to introduce another color to the pallette takes time. You have to mix it, wait for it to dry, wash brush ect. A nid army seems like it can be done to an acceptable level with 5 colors and a wash. 2 or 3 colors for the skin, some mouth , eye, theet, claw color. Paint the base and you are ready to go.

Death Guard are super satisfying both in hobby modeling and on the tabletop. There’s a ton of neat details that are really distinct and simple to pick up with edge highlighting and other techniques. They are also the best example of shades making things look so good so easily.

Here’s a mini I did today while on conference calls:

Took about an hour and a half and used just a handful of colors.

I'll pretend to blame autocorrect. The army is really called Adeptus Custodes.

But yes if you like Death Guard, go with DG because Chaos is always cooler :colbert: Come to the smelly dark side, brother. They can also be run fairly elite if you go vehicle heavy, or 3-wound Blightlords and 2-wound Plague Marines sound like it's going to be pretty loving sweet in 9th.

*luckily there are canonical non golden Custodes colour schemes

Each basic unit is basically as strong as a Space Marine character which leads to very strong, very few individual models which means every decision you make counts because you're hauling around hundreds of points per unit so a wrong decision is amplified greatly compared to moving a blob of horde infantry in a bad direction.

More hobby-related, but a quick, easy, and imo better way to paint gold than regular gold paint is to paint silver as a basecoat and use a contrast over it. Snakebite Leather and Iyanden Yellow both make great, very different golds. Snakebite leather in particular looks very realistic imo.

I've ordered Shoulder pads and heads in the past that were "fine", but it all comes down to which material the individual shop allows. There's a pretty big difference between whatever their "smooth" and "extra smooth" is. I have access to a resin printer, so those would be the cheapest, quickest, best quality for me, but shapeways is definitely serviceable.

I haven't tried either of them, but I've used goregruntha fur to make a kind of bronze/dark gold. I did it over balthazar gold on my disc that ahriman is on. I'm sure it would be brighter over a silver metallic, the fur acted more as a shade, but still metallic

This model uses a lot of contrast over metallic. The top of the disc, the robes, and gloves are all various contrasts over Army Painter plate mail.

dang that looks good. Exactly what I plan to do for my Thousand Sons with the contrast over Army Painter plate mail.

I've seen pictures of yellow contrast over silver or Citadel Leadbelcher and it looks great. I happen to think Citadel's metallic base paints are pretty good (aside from the rare random big chunk) but I've never used Scale 75's.

Yeah, most of the army I did just Kantor blue. The lower robe is levadon blue over plate mail with plate mail highlights on like the folds.

Spray paint krylon gray primer (if that matters) then a couple layers of sybarite green as the base, and then hit the edges/raised areas with Moot green. That's it.

If you mix glitter into your paint it will make her look very, very weird and 'off-scale'. Terrain makers use glitter to simulate piles of gold and gems. Metallic paint is basically heavily ground down mica flakes which function in a similar way (but with a smaller particle size. Someone posted a marine that their daughter had painted with glitter paint and it was a very... interesting look. I would definitely test it on something disposable first before you try it on a horribly overpriced character model.

Edit - For actual useful suggestions - try either candy coating (clear paint/ink over a very shiny metallic undercoat) or colourshift paints if you want something really sparkly.

Snail Information posted:

Also don't use nail varnish as it's meant to go on thick and smooth. Some may be acrylic but I'm pretty sure it will clog all your details because it's designed to hide whatever gross nail it's being applied to. Unfortunately the lovingly sculpted details on hams share many characteristics with a gribbly fungal toenail.

They've got some sweet stuff. I picked up "The Floor Is Lava", "Bullion", and "Emerald Nightmare" and have been painting some reaper bones mini with it. TFIL is beautiful, Bullion coats extremely well for a gold, and Emerald Nightmare is basically "black unless in absolute perfectly pure light"

Not a 'hams because I haven't taken good pictures of my colorshift Necrons, but here's a quick Minotaur I whipped up to test out some new colors:

I hit the cloth parts with a quick shade to level out all the sparkly, but otherwise this was mostly just base coats.
