Interesting, I worked with several Nepalese Soldiers in the Army, one of them a Thapa. One them had mentioned him being a higher caste but I didn't really have any idea what any of that meant. All of the Nepalese I met in the Army were well educated enlisted Soldiers that consistently outperformed most of their American born counterparts and superiors. They never talked too much about Nepal but they all seemed proud to be Nepalese but I got the vibe that they weren't all that happy with how society is back in Nepal, especially the women.

Seeing you mention a name I recognized (Thapa) made me google the last names of the others and it looks like they all have surnames related to the higher castes. Guess that makes sense since they would have an easier time immigrating to the US.

Even within the Thapas there is a hierarchy with some groups being more Hindu or Buddhists in their social practices. Its really weird, and has only gotten stranger post civil war. Appropriate image to post for Indonesia's 75th year of anniversary. I can't help but admire the Indonesian soldier. Then when I looked up the other photo's in the series, I noticed I wasn't the only one. Seriously though, they're so young. They were probably kids during the occupation of their respective countries, and then they had to take up arms several years later when they thought it was all over.
