As far as I remember, (and my Japanese politics knowledge is both minimal AND half remembered), Japanese politics is pretty standard, but with notes of a weirdly conservative society, and the same kind of nationalist right-wing nutjobs that you get everywhere else in the world. But I don't know much about them since Japan has the world's most inept opposition parties, the LDP is the only party that matters at all.

Technically, yes, it is a democracy, even though the PAP always gets a super majority, they only get 60-65% of the popular vote. Their are issues with the Westminster system that makes it harder for non-PAP parties because Singapore itself is...well I wouldn't say gerrymandered, but heavily segregated. And so you also end up with the PAP as the majority party against different smaller parties instead of one unified opposition. Its weird to say all non-PAP parties are regional in a country that small, but they kinda are.
