Given one of the main safety features of submarine nuclear reactors is that if poo poo goes badly wrong they'll be safely at the bottom of the Norwegian Sea, I'm not 100% happy with them being the go-to solution for land-based generation.
They still didn't manage to wreck one of them despite nearly 60 years of treating them with the same respect that a pissed up rugby squad treats a chained up bicycle in a city centre, so I'm confident enough.

Boringly at some point the RN dropped the department-specific ranks meaning that the OR atom-wranglers on our subs are boring old ratings rather than being stokers, as propulsion specialists have been called for as long as propulsion didn't involve big bits of cloth.

Actually it was probably exactly because of that, the image that there's some sweating shirtless bloke shoveling uranium into a reactor at the back of HMS Valiant didn't go along with the great New Elizabethan vibe of our nuclear subs.

They still didn't have an official blood alcohol level for working on them until the Armed Forces Act 2011, and even then on the submersibles it was apparently more of a culture thing than an official thing.

Those reactors have had CERA piss in their cooling loop.

They're estimated to be in service by 2035 at best, so who knows what we'll be sending them up against and how badly they'll be obsolete by then.

How else are retiring politicians and civil servants going to get their BAE Systems directorships?

There's also an ingrained mindset in a lot of industries that if a new thing isn't bigger, more complex, and more expensive than what it replaces, it's a step backwards. Introducing new equipment that isn't hideously overcomplicated, overweight, overbudget and overdue would be a betrayal of Our Boys.

Most of the ground attack missions taking place in the Middle East could probably be performed perfectly well by 40s era turboprop planes with updated electronics costing a fraction of the price of an F-35. It's never going to happen, because the Daily Mail would throw a hissy fit over us having a 3rd world airforce.

They already are and will continue to be. The US are planning to keep their B52s in service for another couple of decades while the U2 stealth bombers are to be retired. There's not much point in sending a multibillion pound super-top secret and very slow aeroplane on a mission halfway round the world past the radars of dozens of countries just desperate for a chance to spot you so that you can drop a pitifully small number of bombs on someone in a hilux. Send the airborne Bedford lorry instead.
