Living the Dream
I can't remember, is AVX512 still kinda slow/hosed up on Ryzen

Because if that's fixed basically the only thing AMD really needs to do to finally unquestionably beat Intel on every level, including their cherry-picked single/lightly-threaded crown would be to get their boost clocks over 5ghz on air

It probably won't tremendously help with sales since everyone's locked into Intel contracts for eternity but I still think it'd be fun to see Intel release another 14nm i9 with like a 250w TDP and burn some people's houses down

maybe once the 3xxx series is out but VR eats vram and the 2080ti is the same, ram-amount-wise as the 1080ti. not that it isn’t an upgrade, mind, I just feel like it’s not enough of one. the 1080ti is still a beast even today

good news. the 3080 will have less ram for some reason

ryzen doesn't have any avx-512 support, just avx and avx2. afaik only intel has avx-512 for now

Zen 3 out yet? I have threads I need to rip. They're just piling up here. I don't want to start ripping them by hand.

avx512 seems like intel was trying to support vector operations in the datacenter, except that using avx512...
- doesn't have a
- has a serious context switching penalty due to the downclocking they do for thermal reasons
- takes up a shitton of die space (which makes yields more difficult and crowds the die)
- ... and isn't used by anyone anyways

and

- isn't cost effective for large, persistent workloads compared with just throwing a gpu in

one of the spaces it excels at is cryptography (due to the width), but the workload/context switching penalty still kills you for general purpose stuff - it's not cool or worth it to have other workloads (such as a web server) eat poo poo just because you need to encrypt a user token (for example)

Respect yourself, protect yourself: wear an ESD strap!

"dear yospos, my f(29) boyfriend (m30) who I've been together with for 5 years recently worked on my Ryzen system. In the past he's always worn an ESD strap when he would work on my system, so didn't think to ask. This time however I realized he was not wearing one and was already inside my case. I immediately asked him to stop and put one on. He dismissed my concerns and told me, "[he] had grounded himself before going inside". Again I asked him to stop and put on a strap and he refused. I then told him to stop working on my machine and kicked him out of the room. He pitched a huge fit and had been accusing me of overreacting ever since. Ever since then I've been looking at him in a different light. I don't know if I'm ready to leave him yet. How do I get him to see what he did was wrong?"
