Back at the breakfast place? Were they a little sketchy on things, or was that the last job? Like the health code stuff, I remember you mentioning.

Yeah, Breakfast Place, not The Sports Bar That Wouldn't Shut Down After Raw Sewage Backed Up Into the Kitchen. Most of my old crew is gone, but the young pups working there have a lot of hustle, and my boss KM seems to have strangely mellowed out.

Like, back in 2017-18 when I was there, it was a giant hassle if we needed meat sliced because ONLY THE CHOSEN ONE could operate the meat slicer. Despite my repeatedly suggesting "y'know, I've worked at a deli and know how a meat slicer works", I was never granted that level of privilege. Today out of nowhere I got told to slice meat. Which turned out to be a treat, because the meat slicer is in the food truck shared between us and our sister store, and it's air-conditioned. gently caress yeah, will slice meat all day :black101:

The talk about regulars reminded me of my friend's grandfather who passed away a few years ago. He had a regular breakfast place he went to daily. After his funeral, my friend's father brought his picture to the restaurant to let them know he wouldn't be coming there anymore. To his surprise, the FOH AND BOH came out to pay their respects. He must've been a memorable regular.

I floated the idea of bumping WAP in the kitchen at last call as a new tradition and was immediately shot down because "...its cardi b haha" and then chef said "Aaand that song is not pg😂". Do I quit or burn the place down?

I honestly can't believe I was never seriously told off for the offense poo poo I played all the time when I was a dishwasher. Especially since it was a family chain restaurant, and you could hear the music clear as day in the public bathrooms.

Restaurant music is usually horrible, but this "new British cooking" place here will blast some good underground goth/post-punk and industrial stuff in addition to more mainstream old-school British punk. Only time I was not annoyed by loud music at a venue.

My only standard was ever 'if it's an open kitchen, don't play anything obscene loud enough that the guests complain'.

I loved doing prep mornings at the bar/grill, because I showed to start prep at 6am and we didn't have any customers until 11, so I could just crank Dropkick Murphys and go to town.

When I did my overnight baking, I could tell what kind of a night it was going to be by the music that was playing, since I started my shift an hour after the woman that opened. Dropkicks/Flogging Molly/The Clash meant it was gonna be a chill night. Bright Eyes or The Mountaingoats (don't judge, this was back in like '07) playing softly meant that I was going to have to work harder but also quiet because she'd slept like poo poo that day and had a headache and would be working at half speed. And any EDM over 180bpm meant that someone had hosed up and accepted too big an order or that someone had called in sick and it was time to GOGOGO.

In other "WTF?" news, my Ticket of the Day.

A "half sausage" is one biscuit, split in half, with a healthy scoop of sausage gravy. A "full sausage" is two biscuits, with more gravy.

"Riding burrito" means it's getting a tortilla instead of a biscuit. So a wrap instead of biscuit sandwich, essentially. Honestly, I'm so sick of biscuits that's how I make my own snacks there; all the tasty goodies inside without filling up on biscuit, and easier to cram in my maw in the 30 seconds I have between orders.

So the call "FULL SAUSAGE... uh... riding burrito?" did one of those record-scratch-noise moments. WTF was this person gonna do with a pint of sausage gravy glopped onto a tortilla? And do we drop one tortilla or two? Why even bother with the tortilla, we can sell sausage gravy by the cup, lord, I dunno so many questions

Probably. If I ask for something without cheese the follow-up question is always if it’s an allergy. Presumably that’s so if it is an allergy the kitchen knows to do the cross-contamination thing.

Well, I got called into my old place for one shift while someone's out of town. Apparently its only normal levels of Sat hosed up, so it shouldn't be too bad. 10 weeks out of the game though, hope I don't drop anything. (lol what are they gonna do? fire me?)

We have egg whites. Also confusingly the order system also has "egg substitute" still listed. Despite us not having it for like, 2 years. I just want the call center to actually learn to read the menu and have some common sense on how to write things. Like say, once I had a whole list of things. Bread, burger, cheese... when they could have just clicked "chicken bacon club" with a note "no chicken, sub burger."

Doesn't help that the tickets print as they write them. With no auto populating in a sensible order. So I'll have, say, two omelettes with the same toppings. But written in entirely different orders. It's maddening.

Only people younger than 30 think pain is weakness leaving the body. It's actually youth leaving the body.

As a side note, I work at Amazon (lurk this thread since I was once a BoH slave too, now I work in the box mines) and after training a literal couple hundred people I have to resist the urge to just point and laugh whenever a new hire is all proud about being a cross-fit athlete. While they're generally not the first to whine about how tired and sore they are, they tend to blubber and whimper in especially hilarious ways when they find out how very NOT in shape they actually are.

Intelligent and bright, they explored a world that was new and strange to them. They liked it, they thought - a whole world just for them! They were dimly aware that a God had created them, was watching them; they called out to him, thanking him in a chittering language, before running off.
Last night I got a ticket to-go, table #0.

I work at a casino, our to-go tickets are either labeled with the customer name or the number of the beeper we gave them to alert them when their order was finished. There is no beeper 0. Four minutes later I got a second ticket for table 0 to go, with the exact same ticket number (this indicated that the order was added on to an established ticket, not a new order. On to-go orders we require the guest to pay immediately, which closes the check. A follow up like this indicates that after they ordered, but before they paid, they wanted something else. Unusual but not impossible, except for the long time span). Four minutes on the dot after that I got a third ticket, table 0, same ticket number again. This is a thing that does not happen. I went and looked, nobody at the host stand, paying for their order.

I held on to the kitchen copy of the tickets, handed them off to my FoH counterpart, we looked them up after close. Turns out the entire night crew had noticed a guest used a $100 comp to pay for $50 in food, and decided to add on their own take home orders to the comp three hours later. Incredibly, incredibly obviously. Like, I guess they assumed I am mostly braindead. The casino I work for treats using a customer's comp to order food as direct theft of paper money, and it is usually an immediate firing offense. Basically, our accounting department is probably about to fire literally my entire closing staff, all because they are so stupid they couldn't even make up real looking fake tickets.
