https://twitter.com/oneunderscore__/status/1299806359106596867 I'm probably overthinking this, but I've had a thought niggling at me for a while that either the Republicans or the Tories will at some point attempt to not only flirt with QAnon but to actually try and harness them to a good old-fashioned moral panic. Trump and his lot seem most likely - I can totally see him just straight up accusing Biden of eating babies in the debates - but I always assume anything out of the Telegraph is a trial balloon being floated by Johnson, and I have to wonder if this is the next dead cat they're lining up.

One concrete example of the damage Qanon poo poo does is terminally cynical libs going "oh look people going on about the 'Hollywood pedophile conspiracy' again *eyeroll*" while ignoring the very real pedophile conspiracy that multiple people are currently in court over

If Johnson announced an investigation into pedophile child trafficking among the elite, even if it was a stupid fake Q one, the royals would pull the rug from under him so fast. Related, this came up in the crazy political forwards thread and it's good, if best understood through a Protestant/Evangelical lens, but that does explain pizzagaters/qanans.

Tabloid front page journalism is also a very good example of that "bearing false witness so that people can feel better with zero personal improvement" that it's probably the UK spiritual equivalent of Jack Chick evangelism. "At least I'm not a pedophile jihadist on benefits. In fact I'm very against those things."

I have faith that through hard work and perseverence the UK can manage to be the worst at something that is inherently poo poo. As far as putting things on shelves go I suspect that most of the world is probably better at it from a maximum labour for minimum pay perspective.

I will say that when I put something on a shelf it usually stays there until it is intentionally removed. And very rarely does it spontaneously go on fire.

The whole 'Labour have suddenly caught up in the polls! Tories panicking!' thing is meaningless, because A: it's only one poll, and B: there's still another four years before the next election. If anything comes of this, it'll be the Tories sticking their knives into Johnson's back and choosing someone even worse from the ultra-Brexit wingnut fringe as leader. Starmer has had absolutely no influence on any of it - it's all self-inflicted on the Tories' part through their sheer callous incompetence. The LOTO might as well have been a wet bag of flour for all the difference it would have made. (And probably preferable to having a member of the loving Trilateral Commission as leader of a supposedly left-wing, pro-worker party.)

Comrade Fakename posted:Yeah, ditch the most left-wing region of the country, good plan. If it meant the rest of England could receive a more equal portion of funding, job opportunities and investment that would be good probably. For example, London receives £509m in funding from the Arts Council, whilst the North East receives £56m. 1 organisation in London, the Royal Opera House, received more funding (£74m) than entire regions of the UK. London has 73 MPs so it also seems a bit useless pouring all the hopes and dreams of a country into a city that has just over 10% of the MPs. But sure, why won't London save us

Communist Thoughts posted:i'm still unsure whether kier is stupid, a sap or cynical. Honestly, it's probably just a bit more of the 'stupid' side, because the thing is, politicians are. I went to uni with people who went into politics and they were just all.... fine? Mediocre, often good with people, but nothing special in the brains department. The smart people were going into banking (there was money in it then), law, business - but not politics. I'm also convinced this is where the expenses scandal etc comes from - people who take the view of "well I would be making loadsa dosh if I had gone into business/banking/law like my mates at uni, but I chose to *swoon* serve the public, saint that I am. So I should just take a bit extra to make up the difference." you couldn't have done those things, you weren't bright enough
