which members of metallica are actually good at their instruments?

Hetfield is a very good metal rhythm guitarist and a decent guitarist in general. Trujillo was good in Infectious Grooves, but I haven't really listened to metallica since he joined.

Kirk and Lars are hot garbage.

I saw them at an underage gig at the old palace in st kilda when I was 17. I had to show ID to prove I was young enough. There were a couple of 13ish year old kids getting tossed from one side of the mosh pit to the other. It was the wildest time I've had without booze.

I went to one and was sitting down up against the D having a bit of a rest and waiting for the next act I wanted to see. Stayed too long in one spot and ended up with polka dot sunburn.

I like it a lot but i think S&M2 setlist is a little weaker overall. If it were up to me they'd have done fewer repeats but they're kinda stuck playing Puppets, Bells, Sandman, One & NEM at every show or else facing a riot.

I don't really love the 3 tracks they picked from Hardwired, I'd swap one for Cyanide or All Nightmare Long .

The high points of S&M were Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me and Sad But True, and I think S&M2 matches that with a revisit of All Within My Hands, The Day That Never Comes and Unforgiven III.

Thanks, it was both a nasal swab and a throat swab. The nasal swab was deeper than the nostrils but didn't feel like it was at the back of the throat, so just mildly irritating.

Its a rock and a hard place situation. they cant just re-do the original set list but they also dont have a lot of songs in their back catalog that would have benefitted from the S&M treatment, so they have to pull from st. anger and death magnetic at the very least.

if anything the st anger songs probably sounded better with a bit more dynamic added to them by the orchestra.

full disclosure I listened to like 30 seconds of one of the songs on spotify and Lars' drumming was so bad I had to stop.

Glad metallica refunded their last tour because it would have been underwhelming as gently caress compared to the one 9-10 years ago where I was on the barrier for Master of Puppets and Kirk and James did the guitar harmony interlude right smack bang in front of me.

Nah here's a bunch more songs that'd do well with the orchestra IMO. Dream No More, Unnamed Feeling, Cyanide from the last few albums. If they went further back (they said they wouldn't for this, I get it) you get stuff like Orion or Harvester of Sorrow which would slap with the symphony. The issue is they have to hit their staples, pick songs that aren't super deep cuts and make sure it's still pretty recent. If they just did 1 night of classics and 1 night of deep cuts and were upfront about "tonight we play weird stuff" it'd be great, but that's just not how the world works I guesss. It's still cool there's like 5 hours of S&M now. Outlaw Torn is one of their best songs ever.

Metallica dont have it in them to venture into 'weird stuff' sets. Lars plays almost the same set every night and still cant get it right.

Id love to see Orion and I dont think its a stretch to say its a deep cut, its probably just that the lack of vocals makes it a tougher sell to the Metallica crowd, imo.

Theres only so many songs that work well with an orchestra too. Trapped under Ice or Ride the Lightning, two of my favorites, would not work well at all with an orchestra.

Pulling teeth is pretty sick though.

e: something that really sticks out to me as a fan of both Metallica and Nine Inch Nails is that while Hetfield is a fine songwriter, he does not have the ability like Trent to completely reinvent a song into something else that is not only complimentary to but also totally separate to the original work. Sanctified for example by NIN gets played totally differently these days to what it was in the 90s/00s, and both versions are cool in their own way.

A lof metallicas songs could be reworked in a way that makes them fit with the orchestra better, but they lack the creativity to get there. They did that weird acoustic version of Blackened recently in isolation and its incredibly distant from the original but adds nothing of interest. its just a lazy reinterpretation. Maybe they just dont have to work as hard because they are metallica and they could play everything by the numbers and put violins behind it and the fans would still pay top dollar for it, who knows.

I feel like the revamp of All Within My Hands directly undermines your point. It's super different, has a new structure and is now a pretty great track.

As for deep cuts, maybe Fixxer could've finally happened, or something like Hell & Back. Unforgiven II (a single, but totally overshadowed by the first) would've been cool too.

And as for Orion, it owns truly, and probably could've replaced Ktulu in S&M2, but I guess they wanted to keep a lot of the Kamen stuff. Ultimately, it's cool there's two S&M sets, the tracklist not being my most ideal perfect fantasy is a minor quibble compared to how much I enjoy these albums.

I got my second fastway package fine, except for the fact that the guy asked me to come and meet him at the entrance to the building (which is fine) but just decided to forge my signature and leave the package sitting on top of the letterboxes outside the building before I got from my flat to the front door, which is about 15 seconds.
