IIRC in at least one state you're allowed to keep deer that someone else hit with a car, but not one that you hit yourself.

Probably not a good idea to harvest a smashed deer unless you know what you're doing.

I don’t get the point of not allowing motorists to remove their own hazard from the road but letting them call a buddy to give them a tip on a fresh kill. Is there an epidemic of people actively hunting deer with the front end of their cars? I like Alaska’s approach. The state maintains a list of interested parties. When roadkill is reported, locals on the list get a call. If they can show up and remove it posthaste, it’s theirs. Some of these parties are charities who distribute the meat in food pantries and soup kitchens. That’s why loading up your own roadkill is illegal in Alaska. It’s theft from the people.

I just googled it and came across a blog post by a person who said they've tried to salvage a roadkill deer a few times and the meat is always ruined by all the blunt force trauma of hitting a car and the road. Also, if it were legal, people would use their lovely old trucks with brush guards to hit deer even if doing so caused a bunch of damage. People are stupid.

In college one of my classmates clipped a deer on the way to our wildlife management class and the professor took a quick trip to grab it for an impromptu dissection, that was pretty cool.

People would just be spotlighting deer rather than destroy a vehicle if they wanted easy meat and are okay with breaking laws.

I'd like to point out that a lot of wild animals can be flat out inedible, deer included. You won't catch trichinosis from eating store bought pork raw anymore, but chowing down on a fresh bear steak comes with a high probability of that happening. I actually asked my grandfather(old Alabama country boy) if he's ever eaten roadkill, and he told me that he and a buddy ate a particularly fat raccoon that they ran over. He told me was sick as a dog for about two weeks and would not recommend eating a trash panda.

Cook the meat properly and Trichinella isn't going to be a problem. There are temperature charts you can consult. And try not to touch your eyes with bear-bloodied fingers.

Pretend I don't know anything about welding, what is wrong with this setup? Edit:VV I see now. I just processed that it was an odd looking clamp and was looking for a fault in the way the wiring was set up or something. The micrometer I have looks nothing like that one. It’s only a hundred‐dollar error, assuming that losing that micrometer doesn’t disrupt ongoing work. It’s real dumb, but it’s probably not even the most expensive mistake the perpetrator has made this month.

Cojawfee posted:Is it legal to keep deer you hit with your car there? I think it's illegal in Texas. When I was 9 years old, my mom was driving us to grandma's house on Christmas Eve when we hit a deer and did a good amount of damage to our minivan. We were in one of the redneck/good-ole-boy dominated areas of the state (Jackson, Michigan) and a line of pickups stopped behind us-- to check on the deer. Not one person came to see if we were dead or alive, they just wanted to wait and see if we claimed the carcass or not. We were shaken up but mostly fine, and did not claim the carcass, so someone else went home with Christmas dinner. I can probably mark that as my first time realizing people truly suck.
