In the movie adaptation it ends there, but L 'wins' by writing down his own name in the death note, setting the death at 40 days in the future, secretly making it impossible for Light to murder him, then goading light into showing his whole hand. The anime/manga after that point is pretty bad, though the recent one-shot is fun  yes that is canon
