This isn't true. Shin Megami Tensei III was on PS2. Heck, SMT1 had an iphone port at one point. There was even a Japanese exclusive SMT game for the original Xbox.

And neither Sony nor Atlus have confirmed any Persona series exclusivity contract. If there was, Sony would no doubt be touting it big time.

I'm referring to post PS2. It started with the Nintendo DS. Strange Journey, IV, IV:A, and V have all been Nintendo platform exclusive. Persona 3, 4, PSP remakes, and Persona 5 have been exclusive to Sony platforms. It's only the past season that Atlus has began slowly allowing the series to other platforms to a degree with Golden on Steam and Nocturne remaster on PS4.

All this Mario news made me decide to revisit Super Mario 3D Land, and man, what a delightful game that is. As it turns out, I never finished all of the extra levels at the end, so I'm tackling the last handful now. Even finding the star coins is fun, since some of them are hidden in clever ways and they encourage you to explore the levels.

I've heard that Super Mario 3D World is even better, so that sounds great. I wonder what Bowser's Fury will be like.
Oh man, the second loop of 3D Land is great. I remember the same thing happened to me, went back to it after a while and realized I never finished the second loop and ended up basically being like a sequel. I was hoping they'd bring the 3D Land levels over as extra content, hopefully Bowser's Fury is a similarly big chunk of new levels.

A lot of old pre-rendered 3D games look pretty bad in general, particularly since you can directly compare them to...actual 3D stuff nowadays.

Based solely on my one playthrough, the evidence did narrow things down, but at the end after exhausting everything I could see I still had multiple suspects with plausible evidence against them. The game didn't say anything about who I ended up accusing other than whether the evidence was sufficiently convincing. So not entirely open-ended, but still playing up the ambiguity at the end.

3D World is a bit like 2 games in one

The first half or so is pretty easy singleplayer. Stages are really really wide open and let you wander around, and it's really difficult to mess up the platforming. These stages are the best for multiplayer because of that, but in singleplayer can feel way too easy.

The second half is a really fun, often super punishing mario game. I like it a lot but it's actually harder to do with other people (Still possible, I got to and beat Champion's Road with 1 other friend coop)

I played through the whole thing coop first, then when I got a Wii U myself played through it singleplayer and had a very different but still good experience

I guess that my point is that its really weird that your biggest complaint about a game is that it doesn't take as many risks as it should and only was an excellent mario game

I have a personal theory that the complete lack of a library at the time on the Wii U hurt people's perceptions badly too. The Wii U was very much the console of "We're not going to blow your mind, but here's a lot of top tier games" for the first couple years.

I didn't get very far in it on PC (because I'm not that great at video games) but if you like the idea of a tough but fair platformer with a distinctive old timey aesthetic/soundtrack, go for it.

I'd probably be willing to give it another chance on Switch if it drops really cheap in the eShop someday. I've gotta say, the Switch is particularly well-designed around the principle of minimising the friction between "thinking you might want to play a game" and then doing so. There are so many things in my backlog that I can't be bothered booting up on PC/PS3/Wii but would likely be working through right now if I had them on Switch. Paying $60 for something I already own is the sticking point though.

Convenience is definitely a big thing. The Switch can be played in various form factors and tends to minimise loading times and interface barriers. Especially considering how slow and fiddly the Wii U could be, and how the other consoles tend to plaster their menus with ads.

My biggest issue with 3D Land is controlling it with the 3DS joystick which isn't great. My thumb tends to slide off it eventually so I move in fits and starts. But that's not the game's fault. I began to "speed-run" it, just going straight to the goal since I beat it ages ago and it's good. If that's the proof of concept for World, then yeah definitely worth it. It's not the most challenging platformer, but it has some moments and generally speaking it plays incredibly well.

Araxxor posted:

Considering I have to retrieve my Switch from its dock when I play it, I tend to miss the ads as I'm unlocking it as I walk to where I want to sit. So I'd argue they're easier to miss. But you're point stands.

Context is everything. At the time, I think SM3DW got lumped in with the New SMB series that was already outstaying its welcome, and it didn't really have the presentation and variety that you'd expect from a 'mainline' Super Mario game. Especially since I think a lot of people, including myself, were eagerly anticipating a proper HD Mario that took full advantage of the hardware to stretch its legs. (which we eventually got in Odyssey, which pretty much hit every single note to drive people crazy about it) With its weird half-assed 3D and dubious multiplayer, 3D World came off as a little neither one thing nor t'other, I think, with plot and presentation being very by-the-numbers and uninspiring. It is fun that it brought back a lot of elements of the original games like playable Peach, map screens and bonus levels, but didn't really do that much interesting with them.

I would argue it's better than odyssey in a lot of ways. Odyssey has some cool ideas here and there, some of the levels are amazing (New Donk City, The Garden) but there's a lot of levels that are awesome the first time you see it and much less awesome after, like the pointless Dragon battle level, or the fairly mediocre water themed ones. I can have a ton of fun playing 3DW today, I would need to drink a reasonable amount of brain bleach to get the same enjoyment out of Odyssey.

Clean with 2 people would take a LOT of practice, we did loads of bubbles. It didn't need re-kindling in my case but Breath of the Wild was the revolutionary game for me. Odyssey didn't do much for me, even if it's undeniably good, and I probably enjoyed 3D Land more, with my only complaint being it felt easy, which is understandable. I'm pretty confident I'll get all the Mario games coming out nonetheless, even if I'll admit I much prefer the 2D games (which is probably why I should just by NSMBU, but that... feels wrong).

But that's probably because 3D Land, aside from the non-ideal console, is 3D Mario with short stages that including more difficult platforming challenges, which is what I enjoy from the series.
