Huh - that makes sense. I've got some friends from South Asia and some from the Caribbean who still have a sense of belonging to there, despite never visited, because to their parents it means something.
I guess my bafflement is that I'm english sub-working class and we don't really have a culture anymore. My cultural identity is a blank, so I have no attachment to something that doesn't exist. But I guess if you actually have a history or culture you can relate to and have a sense of contact through relatives, then it would be a tangible part of your life.
Weird - I live in the purportedly historic UK, but have no history I can claim. But then I'm very low class scum and probably don't count for a drat thing.
All power to your heritage! (as long as you don't get racially odd about it - then go gently caress yourselves)

England has a culture, its just when you invade half the world and keep trying to force your culture upon them, they will at some point start absorbing it into their own to the point your culture starts seeming less defined and unique. Take football (soccer), its an English sport and steeped in English culture (yes many cultures had something similar but modern football is directly taken from English football) but we don't think of it as English any more as the entire world has adopted it and are frankly better at it then the English are (this is also true for quite a few sports).

Carolla sucks.

My best guess is that he’s referring specifically to beef stew, which is associated with cowboys? I just picture the scenes in old westerns where a bunch of cowboys are huddled around the fire at the end of the day eating stew.

Of course it’s telling that the best example of manliness he can come up with is one strictly from the movies.

I assume Carolla sees stew as the epitome of the sort uncomplicated, straightforward meal that “real” men are capable of cooking. Throw meat and some veg (carrots and potatoes only. No greens because those are for rabbits and sissies!) in a pot with water and cook it over an open flame. Super manly!

Carolla is a dumb bitch but lets all be honest here, stew in almost all forms is delicious and generally very easy to make. We should all be eating stew, chowder, and idk...curry is basically spicy stew, toss that one on too. The easiest way for a lazy cook to make something delish.

Is there an italian version of plastic paddies? I feel like American "italians" are like 500x more annoying about their poo poo. My favorite thing is when they do those DNA tests and find out they're not italian at all

This. I make some kind of stew about once a month. It's super easy, but delicious. All you need is time, so it's good weekend food. Now I find out I've been a chud all along :(

Italian American culture is such a weird distinct thing that’s so separate from actual Italian culture that I don’t want to call it plastic. It gets satirized in an exaggerated way in things like Jersey Shore, but it really is it’s own thing. So much so, that you’ll find a lot of people who operate fully within the Italian American culture who aren’t actually Italian by blood. It’s not unusual to meet someone who seems to check off all of the Italian-American stereotypes but is actually of Puerto Rican or Colombian background. It’s not necessarily that they falsely believe themselves to be Italian, that’s just the culture they feel comfortable in.

Ok but they absolutely refuse to shut the gently caress up about how they're "italian" and all the various things that implies, and they always had "family in the mob" or "connections"

They're like what olive garden is to italian food, but they make it their whole personality

It has meat and it's easy to make (just open the can and microwave it, so simple), therefore it's extremely manly. Cooking is for women.

The only bit I can recall about that show was one in which Carolla went on a date with his mom that ended up in bed. Then I remember listening to him wax poetic about the 70's incest porno taboo on loveline back in the 90's. His having a weird idea of manliness is really starting to make sense.
