if there's photographic evidence anywhere of a pool's water level significantly lowered by a passing forest fire i would love to see that because it just doesn't make physical sense

The thing that kills you while trying to hide in water is infrared radiation that can penetrate water, not the water boiling off, all the math in the world about temperature change won't start intercepting radiant heat. A foxhole solves that problem, but now you're back to "the air is as hot as a blast furnace" and your foxhole is an oven. The best way to survive a fire is run the gently caress away before it can trap you. Crazycryodude has issued a correction as of 23:43 on Sep 8, 2020 |

there are fire shelters that are like a pup tent or biovac with aluminum foil covering it they sometimes save the lives of trained fire fighters but the success rate is kinda miserable. as someone that’s untrained... uhhh good luck

If you have your car there you can get down in the footwell and the car will protect you from radiant heat. You just have to hope the fire doesn’t actually go over your car and kill you in it. Plus when you get out you have to do so carefully so you don’t burn yourself on the metal. Being inside a building will also, protect you from radiant heat, but again, you have to hope the fire doesn’t go right over you. The best way to survive a bushfire is to not be anywhere near it in the first place and to evacuate early.

Stereotype posted:the best way to survive a brush fire is to pee on it, thereby exerting your dominance over the fire PLEASE DELETE THIS!!!! PEEING ON A FIRE STARTED BY LIGHTING OR SOME OTHER ELECTRICAL MEANS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!! THE FIRE TYPICALLY MAINTAINS THE ELECTRICAL CHARGE FOR UP TO A WEEK AFTER IT IS STARTED, AND ANY TYPE OF URINARY CONTACT WITH IT COULD BE FATAL

TeenageArchipelago posted:If you set up the tent in a pool would that help? i'm guessing the issue at that point would be if the fire passes before you run out of oxygen. the woodland specific fire engines are designed for burnovers like this, take a look at this video from australia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDTrqQM9NqM They're putting up an IR reflecting window shade, but really what makes the engines special is that they can spray the water its carrying onto the vehicle itself, you can see it in action during an actual fire here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8gZLgRSSfw&t=225s (thats a wild video if you keep watching) There don't seem to be as many videos from the US, but here have a crazy story: https://wildfiretoday.com/2016/07/22/report-released-on-burnover-of-cal-fire-engine/ quote:As E1 crossed through a gate to make access to the fire. E1 stopped in the green and deployed a one inch THY-600 Angus line manufactured by Rawhide Fire, with a 3/8 inch tip for the mobile attack and a reel line to pick up any spot fires. The Captain (FC1) on E1 saw the engine was between the main fire and multiple spot fires. Winds were shifting and the fire behavior was erratic so FC1 from E1 gave the order to pick up the lines so they could move to a better location. As the two firefighters (FF1 and FF2) began to roll up the hose, the main fire and spot fires converged and burned up to the engine. FF1 jumped into the engine while FF2 ran away from the engine into the green, losing his helmet. FC1 lost sight of FF2, and seeing only flames, announced on the tactical frequency that a fire fighter had been burned over. Engine E2 radioed to E1 that they were heading toward them. A large fire whirl was between E2 and E1. hobbesmaster has issued a correction as of 01:17 on Sep 9, 2020 |
