It's a somewhat vindicating feeling to know that I'm not alone because one of the big reasons I dug into that Weiner book was because I'd just finished David Talbot's work on the Kennedy's, and coming to the conclusion that JFK was murdered because he threatened to defund the CIA and had an agenda of rapprochement with the Soviet Union (eventually if not initially), I kept thinking about what was it that Nixon did that got him to be removed, because I didn't buy that a President could be removed without the CIA having a hand and an interest in it.

I can definitely believe the CIA involvement with ousting Nixon as a response to the latter’s meeting with Mao Zedong. Mao was at height of the Cultural Revolution at the time, and he was definitely more belligerent (and correct) when he was attacking US foreign policy/ideology than the Soviets.

His argument, which admittedly is speculative, is that Nixon either leaked his own tapes or agreed to the leak of his own tapes as compromise to avoid exposure of his much worse crimes. Namely, his and Henry Kissinger's conspiring with the Viet Cong to not end the Vietnam war until he was elected (Nixon promised them better peace terms than LBJ behind everyone's backs). This is treason and so when the CIA wanted to get Nixon out, Judge argues that this was the safest route they all decided.
