I can definitely believe the CIA involvement with ousting Nixon as a response to the latter’s meeting with Mao Zedong. Mao was at height of the Cultural Revolution at the time, and he was definitely more belligerent (and correct) when he was attacking US foreign policy/ideology than the Soviets.

I dabble because, for a VISUP product, he asks pretty simple and short questions and the guests are usually impressively knowledgeable. But drat, it drawls and gets boring a lot of the time. I keep trying to listen to the relatively recent one about Draper and there was one within the last couple months about how major religious figures like pastors were co-opted by elites to spread a neoliberal reading of the bible.

ok I'm halfway through and remember what I heard Michael Judge say about Nixon before

His argument, which admittedly is speculative, is that Nixon either leaked his own tapes or agreed to the leak of his own tapes as compromise to avoid exposure of his much worse crimes. Namely, his and Henry Kissinger's conspiring with the Viet Cong to not end the Vietnam war until he was elected (Nixon promised them better peace terms than LBJ behind everyone's backs). This is treason and so when the CIA wanted to get Nixon out, Judge argues that this was the safest route they all decided.

e: he also goes on to say this avoids anyone finding out about the gigantic heroin drug trade by the CIA under his administration

ee: this also makes me feel less crazy for clearly seeing woodward and bernstein as loser hacks who got played by intelligence and likely probably never knew, as evident in their lovely journalism since

lol that this is the real face of child sex trafficking in America (not lol)

In the majority of underage sex trafficking cases, Albright said, the child is homeless, has run away from foster care or has been kicked out by their parents, often due to being queer or transgender. Many of these kids end up trading sex for money, drugs or a place to sleep because it’s their only way to survive. Under the legal definition, their “trafficker” could be a pimp but could also be a customer.

“These kids sometimes end up with folks that traffic them and sometimes end up trading sex for a place to stay or food to eat,” Albright said. Implying that all child victims of trafficking are abducted can cause policymakers to ignore critical supports like youth homeless shelters and gender-affirming housing.

“No one is saying it’s OK to pay a 15-year-old for sex,” Albright said. “What we’re saying is that law enforcement can’t be our only response. Children in these situations need a lot of support. What they don’t need is to be arrested, which unfortunately still happens in too many cases.”

Good news, you can be the first victim of this thread's collective (and by no means exhaustive) reading list.

As for my partial knowledge of the list, the only book to explicitly mention P2 is the VISUP "Strange Tales of the Parapolitical", which is a shame because it is probably the worst written book on the list. If you are okay with more broadly Nazi runoff, though, there's lots of good stuff to pick from.

I took some liberties to give some keywords where the title/subtitle wasn't obvious enough. Sorry if they are bad

CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O'Neill (Manson connections to CIA and MKUltra, Helter Skelter as cover-up)
The Franklin Scandal: A Story of Powerbrokers, Child Abuse & Betrayal by Nick Bryant (Epstein-like trafficking/blackmail ring)
The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins (CIA-led projects in anti-communism and coups in the Third World, focus on Indonesia and S. America)
Surveillance Valley by Yasha Levine (Intelligence involvement in the originals of the Internet and technology for surveillance)
Strange Tales of the Parapolitical by William Snider/Recluse of VISUP (Mellon-Hitchcock as financier of CIA, Spider Network, poorly written and edited)
Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control by Stephen Kinzer (CIA MKUltra, Assassinations, Spy tech, Bio and Chem warfare)
Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA by Tim Weiner (History of the CIA...duh)
The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government by David Talbot (Dulles' pre-, during, and post-CIA. Equally horrible throughout)
Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & The Dark Heart Of The Hippie Dream by Dave McGowan (Lots of interesting fodder, without backinge evidence, of Laurel Canyon as a op predating hippies and the music that represents them)
Programmed to Kill: The Politics of Serial Murder by Dave McGowan (Available online as PDF, Note that a couple details of his reporting/hypothesizing ended up being wrong in some killer cases, but as a thesis it's about as crackping as you can get)
Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America's Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years by Russ Baker (Bush Family connections to CIA and JFK assassination)
All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror by Stephen Kinzer (CIA coup in Iran and Middle East involvement since)
Male Fantasies by Klaus Theweleit (Study on the fascist culture of the Freikorps post ww1 through how they depict women)
Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II by William Blum (CIA Cold War Imperialism)
Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years by David Talbot (JFK/RFK assassinations)
NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe by Daniele Ganser (NATO created stay behind units when Allies stopped occupying post WW2)
The Splendid Blond Beast: Money, Law, and Genocide in the Twentieth Century by Christopher Simpson (Post WW2 saving of Nazi war criminals, mass murder in the name of state power/corporate looting)
Blowback: America's Recruitment of Nazis and Its Effects on the Cold War by Christopher Simpson (WW2 and Beyond use of Nazis in covert intelligence projects)
Operation Mind Control: The CIA's Plot Against America by Walter Bowart (Posits MKUltra as a success, Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray, Sirhan Sirhan)
Management of Savagery: How America's National Security State Fueled the Rise of Al Qaeda, ISIS, and Donald Trump by Max Blumenthal (Definitely in the title here)
This Monstrous War by Wilfred G. Burchett (Available online as PDF, Korean War, Very not in circulation as far as I can tell)
Men in the Shadows: The RCMP Security Service by John Sawatsky (CIA bombing Cuban Trade Association in Montreal, Canada)
Think Tank Aesthetics: Midcentury Modernism, the Cold War, and the Neoliberal Present by Pamela Lee (Cold War defense strategy think tanks and their impact on art and greater political reasoning, I think)

i finished the jakarta method and almost finished family of secrets. especially the former is really good, well written and keeps your attention the whole way through. the latter is really good too but i have such a distaste for the Bushes that i find it hard even to spend so much time (it's a long book) on them

A few years ago, the New York Times got behind the idea that Nixon hosed up LBJ's peace agreement. It was by telling the South Vietnamese leadership to stall though. Considering how hosed South Vietnamese leadership was at the time though, I'm not sure they needed Nixon's help to mess it up.

quote:

Richard M. Nixon told an aide that they should find a way to secretly “monkey wrench” peace talks in Vietnam in the waning days of the 1968 campaign for fear that progress toward ending the war would hurt his chances for the presidency, according to newly discovered notes. In a telephone conversation with H. R. Haldeman, who would go on to become White House chief of staff, Nixon gave instructions that a friendly intermediary should keep “working on” South Vietnamese leaders to persuade them not to agree to a deal before the election, according to the notes, taken by Mr. Haldeman. The Nixon campaign’s clandestine effort to thwart President Lyndon B. Johnson’s peace initiative that fall has long been a source of controversy and scholarship. Ample evidence has emerged documenting the involvement of Nixon’s campaign. But Mr. Haldeman’s notes appear to confirm longstanding suspicions that Nixon himself was directly involved, despite his later denials.

“There’s really no doubt this was a step beyond the normal political jockeying, to interfere in an active peace negotiation given the stakes with all the lives,” said John A. Farrell, who discovered the notes at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library for his forthcoming biography, “Richard Nixon: The Life,” to be published in March by Doubleday. “Potentially, this is worse than anything he did in Watergate.”

Julie K. Brown’s series on the sweetheart deal in florida is the most hardcore terrestrial reporting you’ll find on the Ep man.

Read Vicky Ward’s vanity fair article from 2003 (covers Epstein’s financial career, mostly) but be sure to check out her subsequent articles in Daily Beast about writing that article. Sissy Graydon Carter yanked a section about Epstein raping Maria Farmer.

And read International Moneyman of Mystery in NY Mag for a laugh. That author was later fired from the NYTIMES last year for soliciting a charitable donation from Epstein in like 2013 lol
