Any experts on this part of history can fill in the gaps or tell me i'm dumb and bad and got it all wrong The SPD were socdems and Hindenburg, a conservative monarchist, was definitely not a member, although the SPD did support him in the 1932 presidential election when it was a straight choice between him and Literally Hitler the KPD did hate the SPD and generally held the Communist view of the time that socdems were even more insidious than outright fascists because both of them were working to preserve capitalism but whereas one of them did it by declaring "gently caress you communists we will literally murder you" and so were easy to rally against, the other side did it by trying to co-opt the working class into supporting bourgeois democracy by buying them off with minor concessions but Adams is extremely wrong in his original claim because the KPD were basically the only people willing to actually fight the Nazis while everyone else just hoped to vote them out of power (e: minor correction, the paramilitary wing of the SPD also fought the Nazis), and just because the Nazis and the KPD both hated the Weimar Republic it doesn't mean they were on the same side. That's like saying that because Trump and American leftists both hate the Democratic Party, they're therefore the same, which is definitely something believed by the more smooth-brained people online these days. also worth noting that the Nazis at the time had a tactic of marching into leftist areas, picking public street fights with communists, then when the communists fought back the Nazis would heavily publicize it as left-wing violence and declare that only they could save Germany from this chaos, which is uhhhhhhh kinda reminiscent of something but I can't quite put my finger on what vyelkin has issued a correction as of 20:10 on Sep 10, 2020 |

worth mentioning that the SPD used fascist militias to crush the german revolution of 1918 and had the leaders of the communist party murdered about a decade before all this, so I guess maybe the KPD had a good reason to hate the SPD

In the grand scheme of things the weimar republic was the creation of the spd and the fact that it fell to the ndsap can in large part be blamed on the crushing of the German revolution by the social democrats coupled with their extremely dysfunctional constitution People like to focus on the treaty of versailles as the cause of Hitlers rise but really the spd deserves equal blame for loving up at every opportunity The spd are to the democratic party as the ndsap are to the republicans

Over the last few days here in New South Wales there has been a split in our states coalition government. The coalition is made up of the Liberal party, who are tories and the National Party who are country tories. This is a long standing coalition in all levels of government here in Australia and commonly called the LNP. They're effectively the one party with slightly different marketing spins. A little while ago there was a change to environmental laws that increased the number of trees that would count towards koala habitat. What this means is that farmers need to get people out to check if there are any koalas in an area before they're allowed to clear land. Farmers being farmers though found what they thought could be a good loophole. If they're allowed to shoot koalas on their land they could cull them before the inspectors come and as there are none living there would be allowed to remove the trees. Smart people worked very hard on rules lawyering their way into this. Having such a workable plan it was just a matter of getting the rules on shooting koalas changed so everything could go back to the way it was. The National Party leader - John Barilaro - took this idea to the rest of the LNP and said "let us shoot the buggers or we'll stop working in coalition and make you look bad". They threatened to sit on the cross benches rather than with the government so they looked weak and would get bad press etc. What they said they wouldn't do though is resign from any of their extra government responsibilities that also happen to come with a pay bump. Unsurprisingly "we want to blow the brains out of koalas" didn't exactly play well in the press. Gladys Berejiklian - leader of the state Liberal party and current premier - walked into a meeting with them yesterday and said "you'll stop this bullshit right now or we'll cut you off from the teat you so thoroughly love". Almost literally, apparently the meeting was over in about a minute. She gave them till 9am this morning to decide if the pay or the principles really mattered. Guess what happened? https://twitter.com/alexhart7/status/1304200588775677952
