The list is also missing the razorback and bear cubs. I think they're 6 and 7 respectively.

Bear cub is 7 and the passive is +2 armour (+4 with the double benefit perk). Also it hits like a truck in combat.

I think Polly would be fine in a "crosses the line thrice over" way if it were a one-off scene, which was what I treated it as since I didn't buy it off Larry.

There aren't a lot of sniper perks. If your sniper does enough damage, or has a high crit change, the level 10 perk can be very powerful. You can basically clean up a battlefield with a single ambush (as long as you don't have to reload). Also it's better to give explosives to your sniper if you want to sneak attack with a launcher. And there's a weapon mod that can convert a weapon into doing explosive damage.

I wish there was a reliable way to get mods. I didn't even find an explosive mod until my second playthrough.

The mods that change your damage type are unique and have fixed location. I think the Explosive damage mod is somewhere in a mid to late-game location but I can't remember where. A couple other mods like the one that adds +20 damage but -10% hit chance are also unique.

But yeah, weapon mods should have been easier to get. I can understand merchants not refreshing weapon stock since anything you sell will still be there anyway, but mods are one and done. (which is really dumb to begin with imo. At least make them removable with a capstone perk, or something) Field Stripping weapons for the mods is way too expensive and unreliable, plus as far as I can tell you can't get +Range scopes from field stripping, which is the most important one.

It's weird to hear that the Monster Bizarre + Payasos were a backer thing because the game would be so short without them. I spent the first 10 hours trucking between the Bizarre and Colorado Springs and initially thought the game would be massive, but when you get to the actual story missions they're really quite lean. I think I wrapped up the entire Denver plotline in under 2 hours.

I got the explosive one in the first two hours

I remember mods being more plentiful in W2. Maybe they thought they were too strong/useful, so they aggressively nerfed them. It sucks when you put a good sight on a weapon and then immediately come across a better weapon.
Some of them are so rare that they're basically forcing you to read up on what weapons are in the game and wait until you get them to use the right mods on them. Imagine making a modder ranger to leave at base and using the 50% bleed mod on an icepick, because you thought there were more of those.

The companions in general felt like kind of a letdown to me. Three of them could be summed up as “big crazy fighty dude” and of those, only Fishlips managed to not come across as completely evil. The other two got a bullet to the face almost immediately in my playthrough. As far as I know Lucia is the only party member to have a personal quest associated with her, where most RPGs would give everyone their own.

I ended up just sticking with her and Kwon (who was just kinda okay) the whole way through. Maybe I would’ve swapped someone out for Jodie or PIzepi but one of my starting characters already had the Sniper Rifle and Nerd Stuff niches covered.

Not that Victory is really any better I guess, but at least he's got personality. I like Lucia and Kwon well enough but they're a bit bland. Lucia moreso than Kwon.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, MAD-2R World
This is the first game in a while were I'm actually role playing my decisions a decent amount.

1) I'm actually making decisions mainly based on my mission from Ranger HQ, as if I had a bunch of bros in Arizona who will eat poo poo if I don't get supplies from this dildo Patriarch. So I'm not taking risks there unless I have a strong Plan B to replace it.
2) My next priority is helping everybody who isn't some kind of hostile warlord rear end in a top hat or part of some cannibal cult murder circle jerk. I always try to play the Desert Rangers as maximum good guys in a world of poo poo.
3) I don't give a gently caress about the existing law enforcement. Get in my way or try to get me to narc on noted bro of the Desert Rangers from way back Faran Brygo and you can eat poo poo.
4) After two games of the Cochise AI trying to wipe out humanity, I might be biased towards shooting robots in the face, just sayin'

I've only started interacting with Angela Deth over the radio, but so far she hasn't sold me on bailing on my prime directive yet. I just got to meet RONALD REAGAN AI and kind of want to blow it up, but don't see a way to do it (yet) without creating a bigger shitshow.

Cordite is much more interesting if you've read Ironclad, one of the novellas that comes with the fancy edition. It follows him from when his old gang betrays him back in Kansas til he joins the Scar Takers and schemes and plots against the bosses. His whole reason for being is because he's convinced that it's his manifest destiny to rule Kansas and he doesn't actually care about Colorado or the Scar Takers. The whole sequence where he has to prove his allegiance by lopping off his own arm and picking a replacement is pretty drat cool. All in all a decent read if you like some schlok.
I haven't gotten that far into No Way Home but it follows Angela after she leaves your party in the M.A.D. Monk canyon in 2 and then gets into some bad poo poo. It explains pretty well why she's so messed up in 3.

Obviously it's not ideal for a game to hide a bunch of backstory in books, but they're only around 80 pages each and snappy reads well worth it. The lore guide that amongst other things explains what actually caused the nuclear armageddon and the main plot of the previous games is also great.

There's a neat plot point about this if you do though. If you aren't interested in doing a second playthrough: It's not actually the real Faran Brygo. Theres a tape in a backroom which indicates that the REAL one has been sending lookalikes out to set up their own franchises by pretending to be him. That's why the one you see is identical to his picture even though its been 20 years since that picture was done.

My biggest complaint. At the point I got her I had already bonded with my three companions (I only do three customs) and all of his skills were covered. Sucks as I used her all of W2 and would have liked to ask her about Team Echo. I get gating her somewhat as she is a veteran and not some scrub at level 5 but still.... Maybe have her show up at the same time Angela wants you to get Ironclad so you get an alternate nice companion.

Of course all this could be lessened by a big DLC. Would like to hear more details of Team Echo from someone that was close to them as well as more time in general.

As far as companions in general? I'd like more but fairly happy with them. A mission or sidequest would be nice but I was happy enough with little bits like Jodie singing along with the Ranger theme or making comments here and there. The Scotchmo/Marshall being in the Bizarre porno amused me. Ironclad being al grimdark rawr and the rest of the team poking fun at him made me laugh more than it should. I'd like more but they hit that light banter but not enough that they overstayed their welcome. Can't remember the game but there was one where the companion would just not shut the gently caress up, so I count my blessing. Wasn't Cass in NV but it was someone in some game that every time they started to talk I just groaned.

Oh poo poo I had no idea about the Wasteland books but my fancy version on XBone did not have that. Just preorder DLC. I wouldn't mind more fleshing out what happened to Deth as .... jesus christ.

Iron Cordite. You know his ending path right? The one where you go with him to Kansas as his buddy and pillage and plunder?. I found him a decent companion but not one I take on any run that unless it's a "gently caress everybody but me" bad guy run. Dude is that Conan/Genghis Khan barbarian king type and I think he does it well. Found him more interesting than Fishie or Wasteland Joker. Could see him being the protagonist in a sequel as the Rangers clean up their old mess since most probably found him and freed him even if they backed the Patriarch. I remember my first ending and seeing his bit I was like "oh gently caress that was a big oops". I still felt bad for the Godfisher guy in the bunker. I know he killed more people than the plague and would have killed me if he was healthy but for someone like him to die like that made me a bit sad. He should have went out with a blade in his hand and someone else's blood on his teeth.

edit:

There's one companion you can get in Aspen where you're chasing after Victory, specced in Automatic Weapons and Weird Science. With an SMG modded into fire or cold damage she's quite a step up above Kwon in terms of damage. That's quite late in the game, though.

But that's about it. If Kwon already meets your "rear end in a top hat" threshold you're definitely not gonna like the remaining two companions. :v: As far as this game is concerned Kwon is already meant to be one of the more moral companions.

Well, I was thinking more of Cordite when I chose the word oval office. But Kwon isn't great either. He's spying for the Patriarch and he's a Marshal, and you've seen how they operate. That's why I wanna replace him. But I can't until I find a companion, because you can only have 4 player created characters.

Tbf you can ask Kwon about being a Marshall when so many are corrupt and he'll admit that he'll take a bribe for most minor things but only if no-one is hurt and draws the line at looking the other way for really serious things and that he thinks most Marshalls take it way too far.

But yeah the game has pretty odd pacing for companions. Of the remaining companions one is Lucia who I assume you're using, theres the one at Aspen which is close to the end of the game and the other two are as bad as Cordite (and also suck compared to him in terms of builds). Maybe try Scotchmo out, shotguns become crazy strong.
