SpudCat posted:We'll have people too poor or stupid to leave even as the seas rise and claim them Moving is expensive for a reason and some people don't have a choice. So while there might be stupid and stubborn people in these areas, don't disparage the ones who are there and have no choice in the matter because of their financial situation. It's the same logic that was used back with Katrina and "why didn't the people who stayed pack up their cars and leave?" Because they didn't have cars, or if they did, they didn't have the money to afford the gas and lodging inland.

The rich will flee and the poor will die, same with every other time in history in every culture with staggering levels of inequality. A lot of the poor will die to right wing militia adventurism going in and just shooting people indiscriminately with state sanction

It's the same logic that was used back with Katrina and "why didn't the people who stayed pack up their cars and leave?" Yeah I know, that came off as too disparaging. If you want me to rephrase there will be people who are too poor to leave, people who are too stubborn, or people who are simply abandoned by the state. Or some combination thereof. The image in my mind was that picture of the flooding nursing home during Harvey with wheelchair-bound seniors in waist-high water. At some point the rescues just won't come anymore. Much like we've already seen people rationalize those more vulnerable to Covid due to age or disability as an acceptable loss.

I know this is going to sound premature given that it snowed in August in parts of the country, but I think with all the aerosols leeching into the atmosphere from these fires that we're looking at another "Year Without a Winter" at this point.

Wasn't the ejecta from Tambora like, orders of magnitude more than even what we've had so far? Or was it because it was shot up so much higher and had lots of horrible other chemicals in it

UnknownTarget posted:When the people who want to live there can't pay for the repairs anymore. We're basically riding a wave of false normalcy that lasts for as long as insurance companies continue to support these communities. There'll be a hiccup at some point due to a really bad storm or some other event, we'll get more federal support along the lines of flood insurance, and then it'll eventually come collapsing down spectacularly when that's no longer viable. We could also begin policies of managed retreat right now since that's both the most humane and most cost-effective option, but we won't.
