They're forming a rolling roadblock so that the plane doesn't have to take off surrounded by cars, they would've passed traffic, then started to weave back and forth while slowly and safely slowing down, and then come to a full stop, safely stopping traffic. It happened to me once, and I was like WTF is happening? And then a funeral procession got on the freeway in front of me.

If they weren't there, some idiot would have driven past the plane, taken a picture of "this rear end in a top hat is driving his plane on the highway" and then they'd get in front of the plane and go 5 under the speed limit.

Kind of amazed they actually let the plane merge (based off my experience driving on quebec highways)

This isn't much of a GA thread, but I just finished buying a Pitts S-2. The market for planes has gone so crazy recently that a 1990s S-2B is worth less than a decent 1970s Cessna 172. I think the huge stock pile of old trainers might have finally gotten low, driving up prices.

Nice! A similar Pitts was the highlight of the times I’ve gone up and the pilot has given me the stick.

When I did my PPL test my simulated emergency landing was at a golf course. There were some golfers right on my landing path. Of course we flew over them in the end but I'm sure they thought I was crazy.

Aviation was far more interesting before people started focusing on things like “efficiency”, “safety”, and “actually, you know, can fly”.

Bingo. You can find planes which are broadly similar in capability but less desirable for training fleets much cheaper. Congrats on the purchase, by the way.

LULUL1B: https://onemileatatime.com/new-berlin-airport-takeoff-risky/ TL;DR: In certain weather conditions planes flying out of the new airport in Berlin will have to do a (potentially) sickening turn immediately after takeoff because rich people might be annoyed.

I don't know have any Extra, Sukhoi, or Yak time, but I don't get the impression from people who do that they have quite the same impact. I think the stubby little wings and the ability to go open cockpit just makes everything a little more exciting, even if the performance isn't up there with the monoplanes.

I have no idea of how much aerobatic experience you got, but it was my understanding that it would take several seasons before the lack of performance becomes a deal breaker. (ie top end of the advanced category). This was 20 years ago, though, so things might have changed. There were people turning up in Extra 300s for the Sportsman category :/
