I don't know if it counts as a dumb marketing move but it's certainly misplaced advertising; I keep getting ads on Youtube for various beers and hard liquors. I don't drink and I don't know why the algorithm has decided that's all I could possibly be interested in but it's a waste of time to target me.

I've been getting a LOT of ads about babies. Not even specific about the baby's age, I'm getting ads for pre-natal vitamins, pregnancy tests, diapers for everything from tiny babies to toddlers, what I think is baby skin care creams (they're showing a whole lot of parents rubbing things on bare baby butts, which is VERY weird when you're not in their demographic)...

I'm a perpetually single late 20s trans woman. So thanks for the vote of confidence, I guess, but I feel like these ad spots could be better spent. I miss the Tinder ads, they were off the mark too, but at least they felt like they were advertising to my actual problems.

It's one of the many arguments I see for algorithms being way dumber than journalism tends to give them credit for. Facebook thought I lived in India for the longest time.

It was a sad time for me when my email spam changed from "Hot babes in your area want to gently caress!" to "We've got pills that will make your dick work again." Especially annoying as it's one of the few parts of my body that is working properly. Offer me something to cure chronic fatigue or sciatica and I might be interested.

I'm a cis woman and I used to get so many of the dick pill spams. Nowadays it's all property buying which is hilarious because I'm also poor as gently caress.

Most of the Chinese knockoff virility pills are literally filler + ground up viagra that they don't tell you is in there. They work, technically... by being an unregulated dose of the stuff that actually works.

I assume that any function dick sizing pills are just steroids or something in the same way.

Was it here that we were posting about 23andme earlier? I got my results back yesterday.

Nothing too surprising, ancestry associations are mainly French & German/British & Irish/Broadly Northwestern European. The relative finder is only suggesting xth cousins (hundreds and hundreds of them in the US) that participated, nothing close. I am more Neanderthal than 70% of participants, still less than 2%, don't know if it's enough to claim minority status.

Overall, not earth-shattering for me personally, but still interesting. They give you a ton of reports. Recommended if you're the slightest bit interested in genetics, have the money, and aren't put off by the privacy concerns that were brought up earlier in the thread. On that note, be aware that the Health section of the test is unavailable in many European countries, presumably due to said privacy concerns.

The 'minority status' bit is a joke. The Neanderthal bit is due to how most white people are part Neanderthal.

The test checks your DNA to see how many genetic variants you have that are specifically associated with Neanderthals.

Nearly all modern humans have trace amounts of Neanderthal ancestry, with the exception of (ethnic) Sub-Saharan Africans (generally). The latter is because Neanderthals started diverging after they left Africa, and that's also where the mixing occurred.

This is my layman's understanding of the Neanderthal thing, any genetics pros here are free to correct me

It's broader than just Europeans, but I do assume they have the highest percentage. I really need to read up on it more before I make definitive statements. It's pretty interesting how specifically Neanderthal DNA has practically disappeared, but not quite entirely.

This just reminded me of the weirdness that is the Palmaris_longus_muscle- a largely useless feature that is just plain missing in about 14% of the global population. Most people have it is both arms, some have it in just one, and a minority have it in neither. I'd don't have it at all, which is mildly disappointing because it's apparently very useful if you ever need to replace a tendon somewhere else in your body. It's also theoretically 'handy' if you want to climb a lot of trees.

Neanderthals and homo sapiens were technically still just two varieties of the same species (they could have fertile offspring, though presumably with an increased rate of fertility issues) when they encountered each other, so some interbreeding occurred. I found this on 23andme, I think it explains it well in layman's terms:

The current consensus appears to be that the percentage of Neanderthal ancestry used to be higher still, but that it gradually decreased across many generations until only some of the neutral-to-positive mutations were left.

Somewhat related, but a few years ago in the U.K. they did genetic testing of the local population around the Cheddar Gorge to see if anyone was related to "Cheddar man" the remains of a man from about 10,000 years ago who'd lived in the area, and they loving found a direct descendant:

Not that I minded because at least they were very SFW, as opposed to all the 'sexy' games ads I get now. Guess they finally put 2 and 2 together and figured out I'm a white single guy in my 30s that watches a lot of gaming videos.

It kinda sucks that when you browse without adblock the internet suddenly becomes a series of small boxes with the content in them with ads flanking 75% of these boxes on every website. It'd be nice if something were done about that but I guess it's too late.

The video thing is absolutely evil - if I try to browse any threads on here on my phone, and if they are ones with direct links to videos I just have to skip them because they will 100% crash my phone. The default in every mobile browser I've tried is to preload and run any embedded videos on a loop. It appears to be unstoppable. The default behaviour in desktop chrome is loop=on and controls=off. It's set up to be as bad as it could possibly be.

It may be apocryphal, but IIRC it all started with Facebook wanting to push some new video functionality of theirs, so they falsified their metrics to say that people were way more likely to click on videos than they actually were. That then caused a ripple effect making all sorts of advertisers and news organizations switch to short videos as their main way to deliver content.
