Degauss can only do so much, with strong enough magnets or heavy physical abuse you can deform the actual shadow mask inside the tube permanently

What I miss is the static generated by a CRT. I guess I don't really want the dust collecting on the screen, or to get zapped, the crackle of static made it really satisfying to turn off the set.

He bought an old CRT maintenance device (looks super 60s tech with wooden case and large dials) that repairmen would use to send power through the tube to bring it back up to brightness with the downside of it having a shorter lifespan. It was a "this thing is going to die, but we'll bring the brightness back up until you can afford the 1000+ for another 60's 10 inch CRT) It worked like a charm using the lowest refresh setting (lower the less lifespan it burned away) and it looked perfect. I bring this up because this device would solve a lot of problems lots of arcade people are reporting with their CRTs going to pot and this device would save them some time until they finally have to switch to some LCD setup. as an aside about video cables, I heard from a guy talking about SNES/Gamecube AV out -> Component cables can go up to 300$ in price. I have a trash ton of these things, but I must be missing something. Can't anyone just break the adapter open and just recreate the electronics inside instead of paying outrageous prices?

The best was throwing tinsel off the christmas tree onto it when there was a bunch of static built up, then slowly moving your hand towards it until the tinsel jumped off and shocked your fingers

SNES though, just grab an RGB scart cable and run it through a suitable RGB CRT (or OSSC if you're fancy)

They work by "blowing" built-up impurities off of the emissive elements of the tube using spikes of high voltage but those impurities are, of course, still trapped within the tube so they will eventually find their way back to where they originally were. The improvement from the rejuvenation might last for 1000 hours or it might last for 10. Back in the day they were meant as a stop-gap while you waited for a replacement CRT to come in; these days nobody makes replacements anymore and the last businesses that rebuilt CRTs (which was a thing!) went out of business around 10 years ago.

I’ve gotten that impression off of him before, but not to a degree that I couldn’t shrug and go “eh, content” and carry on. I think it’s absolutely wild that he used to let folks just come to his goddamn house and take pictures in his spare bedroom/studio. Like I could grasp him doing that with the dedicated setup in the back yard but just having randos show up and hang out in his living room/kitchen is just wild to me.

I get the creepy vibes too but still watch his stuff if it's something I know I'm gonna be interested in, but it's not like lgr/techmoan where i invariably watch anything they put up because they can make anything interesting
