In the grand scheme of ancient history Markov chain content, the difference between curating each branch on the spot and running the thing 50 billion times and skimming the result to curate the best 5 examples is academic. GPT-2 tends to be flat out better in every way but gets just kind of samey feeling in a way Markov chain throwback days are refreshing.

I'm equal parts entertained and frustrated by AI dungeon, its memory seems to be iffy a lot. Like to the point where it'll just constantly reinvent my name, gender, and position on a whim, even if my "remember this" note is literally just "I am a ranger named Rick" or something. It seems variable too, I wonder if the available resources depend on the user load or something.

I guess you're right, although for me there's a very definite difference in the sense of satisfaction/awe between those two. Like, if an infinite set of monkeys eventually writes Shakespeare, the amount of random variables in that one specific lucky output feels cooler than a human validating the output on a per-word basis to guide the result. I guess it's easier to see a cherry-picked result and appreciate its specifics and ignore all the failed attempts, since there it still feels like the cherry-picking was just one instance of human guidance, in contrast to the seemingly more human-influenced guided writing approach.

It's interesting how it the generated audio seems more muffled and has some noise in it, except for specific moments where I assume the output was cleaner due to there being fewer options algorithmically mashed together. If you keep your game fantasy even if the engine does mistakes like putting in shotguns and making you hunted by rabbits by said shotguns, AIDungeon is pretty great. Instead of a spaceship you just correct that it's a ship and overlook the problem and the games understand it mistakes and automatically makes its adjustment. When you have a scenario that allows people to jump in and out from different dimensions then the game falls down, but wether you have a reliable narrator or an unreliable one (or just a gang of idiots stealing the keyboard from each other) at a certain point the game falls down in a certain precise way... it's like you stop looking at a diorama and instead start watching at a kaleidoscope, in a fog, under acid. The maddening thing about AIDungeon is that it's not just a GPT-3, but it has a world behind it that's made of conflicting entities and how the engine is laid out is that they all just want you to see them win or die as heroes. The kids on reddit agree that you should just hammer the outcome you want until the "AI learns and plays along", but that's not fun and the game becomes just a text predictor where you have to rewrite three fourths of the things that the system already wrote. I mean, the game used to work fine if you tagged a couple of entities as dragons, now it must understand that something is a dragon from the context in the description and god forbid you put contrasting elements with a code there (Good luck in your search for a redhead with green eyes).
