The chud and Qanon line about Cuties is that Netflix is now literally distributing child pornography, so the government has a vested interest in shutting it down, arresting executives, and whatnot. Which, y'know, isn't true, but the usual suspect politicians are all calling for a DOJ investigation. It fits well with their whole "degeneracy of the West" line they keep pushing, and they figure that, hey, they got The Hunt cancelled (or at least delayed), this will be an even BIGGER trophy! Whoever is in charge of marketing at Netflix sure hosed up bad.

The whole Cuties thing seems like some particularly dumb virtue signaling. Like, people REALLY need other people to know that they think pedophilia is bad even though that's the point of the film. I don't care if Netflix did a poo poo job marketing it either. I know a lot of the complaints are "they're SHOWING what's essentially child porn in order to condemn it???" but I don't really see how you do a documentary on child pageants without showing how disgusting and exploitative they are. If we're going on the logic that "it will just attract pedos" then we also need to have some words with like the Disney Channel and probably 70% of the anime genre.

It's not really about pedophilia though? I mean sure there's a focus on how young pre-teens are influenced to sexualize themselves to be cool and fit-in, and while the girls in the movie are aware of the connotations of what they are doing, they certainly and naturally don't see themselves nor do they want to be considered as sexualized. They find the dancing and the dances to be super-fun, and frankly dancing is fun, whatever the style. It's the vehicle that was chosen by the director to also represent a French girl's path to breaking with her immigrant family's traditions, especially the one that is requiring her mother to cheerfully put up with her father marrying a second wife. In the process of acting out she's also discovering herself as an individual. But this is getting off-topic and I'll take it to Ciné-D if necessary.
