BIG FLUFFY DOG posted:When the MeToo stuff first broke and during the parade of celebrities getting outted as sex creeps and rapists one dude kept predicting John Hodgman would be the next one every single page and that he would be one of the worst one by far. There weren't any evidence or even rumors. It was just based on his vibe. I asked him about it once and he acted like I was a lunatic and accused me of secretly being john hodgman, and then went into an unrelated thread to complain about people being "weirdly obsessed" with him for his totally innocent jokes about john hodgman (a name I only even recognize because this guy kept bringing him up) goons are constantly getting huffy about dumb poo poo but that might have been the weirdest tiff I've ever been involved in because I literally could not figure out what I did to upset him

There's also a dude who materializes any time anything involving Jared Leto is even mentioned in passing swearing that any day now he's going to get #MeToo'd because in highschool a friend of a friend told him that she had slept with him after a show once. People using #MeToo to try and legitimize their pathogical hatred of celebrities after the fact is one of the weirdest phenomenons to come out of the whole thing and, much like Benghazi, it ain't going away anytime soon.

big dyke energy posted:I can't believe I forgot about Tony loving Tango. The Ben Biddick thread was great because the dude showed up, was like “I absolutely wrote some terrible poo poo as a kid” and made fun of it in a way that wasn’t just a lame attempt at rolling with the punches. It helps that he was a decade+ out from it so he had some perspective and wasn’t just trying to market it.

If we are talking about non-specific-to-a-thread related nostalgia then the Dropsy guy word-searching his own game then parachuting into any thread mentioning it was memorable. Just when you would forget about him someone would criticize the game in a random dark subforum and boom, he would magically appear to um actually everyone.

also the guy that was really defensive about his revolutionary idea to explain those mysterious roman dodecahedrons. He had convinced people he knew to give him thousands of dollars to invent a water tank that 3d modeled objects. There were many threads over the years. He melted down in a few of them trying to explain the brilliance of roman timecubes or whatever.

"The dodecahedrons were obviously for filling with water to do complicated 10 point mathematics to make sure their sling projectiles were the optimal shape" "What? They fired millions of those things. All you need is a weighty round rock. You don't need elaborate scientific measurements for each loving projectile." "So you are saying my elaborate roman timecube science device that 3d models objects submerged in water is based on a lie? Hmm?" "Here are ten historical reasons why you are wrong/dumb and are just assuming things." "You can buy a prototype for $3,000. Oh and it doesn't work yet."

the only thing I remember about roman timecube guy was for some reason part of his plan was to hire scantily clad models to help sell it so you hear somebody is claiming to have finally figured out what these weird little things were and you go to the website and instead of anything like an explanation or summary or even hint it looks like a Troma movie without the violence " ooooh baby, a genius found out what roman dodecahedrons are for hehe "

This was because "sex sells", you see. The head scientist was like a physics grad student and not at all hot enough to be the face of a "sex sells" campaign.

I think about a lot of threads I read as a lurker that I got shut out of before finishing. poo poo Lasagna (read it eventually). The thread about the girl with the emotionally abusive best friend. At one point the best friend 'casts spell' by drawing dicks in the air with sparklers. Part of this thread made it onto the front page at one point. The thread about the guy who found a girl's journal in a desk he bought. The thread about Final Fantasy 7 House, and then later Suikoden House (which abruptly ends in all the versions I found online later). The Let's Play of the Trillby games where suddenly Yahtzee shows up and (mostly) good sports his way though the thread.

Zoesdare posted:I want to read both of these. "spellcasting magic dicks with sparklers" sounds a lot like a scene from the Ask me about growing up with a girl who thinks she's married to anime guys thread. And I'm fairly sure that's because someone- either uglynoodles or some other goon- went and illustrated said scene. Could be wrong, it's been several years since I sat down and went through that thread, even though it was one of the first threads I read on SA and played a major part in getting me to register. That thread is also where The Saddest Rhino told everybody the story of their university classmate who thought she was astrally married to some guru who she had never actually met in person.

I've tried off and on for awhile to find an old TCC thread from around 2009-2011 that was full of goons sharing anecdotes of times they had found abandoned drugs out in the world. I have such a strong sense memory of sitting at my desk one night in college reading through it on the tiny screen of my asus eee laptop. They all sounded so wild and worldly to the naive nerd I was then, pre-drugs/booze. I would be very curious to read through it again now with adult eyes. Also have a fond memory of a thread from the tail end of the era of gbs superstars posting. It was a spooky story by a goon who claimed to be an army veteran who had been posted to a remote West German base in the 80s. Lots of mysterious happenings, possible nazi ghosts, with the underlying dread and futility of being a grunt during the Cold War in a position that would have been one of the first to be nuked. An obviously false tall tale, but I remember reading it at 2am alone was pretty spooky.
