Alright the AQI’s a bit below 300 and we’ve got flash flood warnings and this is striking me as good news. Maybe I’ll get to open my windows. It has been nine days since I have been able to do that.

Wait what the hell was happening in the Mediterranean sea in 1996? in particular early October. Usually years between, then suddenly two within a few days of each other.

The amount of particulate in the air is comparable to the amount of particulate that would be produced by burning that many cigarettes.

Yet isn't it a flawed comparison simply because cigarette particulate is 'tar,' while wildfire particulate tends to turn to something resembling *cement* inside the lungs? Or is that just volcanic ash that does that?

P sure you're thinking of volcanic ash which turns to concrete in your lungs but *glass* in jet engines and has downed jets by clogging their engines up with what amounts to spun glass in the turbine. E: iirc a British jet flew through an ash plume off indonesia some time back and the resulting "this is your captain speaking" announcement was presumably some extraordinarily british poo poo. Correct. It was British Airways flight 9: quote:Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. Yeah, I remember reading about that. The friction of the ash against the windows also caused a pretty decent instance of St. Elmo's Fire.

Rev. Bleech_ posted:You skipped the best most British part I genuinely love an understated freakout. There’s a good chance you’re going to die either way, I say die smug. It finally rained in Portland. The rain brought with it, without any memorable runner up, the single gnarliest thunderstorm I’ve seen in this part of the state. I’m talking “it looks sort of like daylight for one to two entire seconds” levels of lightning flashes in some cases, they were in every direction at one point or another. We’d get summer storms like that in southern Oregon sometimes, and they were more common out east by Prineville if I remember right, but I haven’t seen one like that up here before. I’m betting there will be some fun new fires in the morning, but it’s supposed to rain off and on for the next day and hopefully that will help a little. Looking forward to opening my windows some day, but it was at least nice to go outside and breathe slightly disrupted smoke and tempt Zeus by drinking from metal cans. I’m surprised I wasn’t beaten with huge hailstones, that’s like the signature move with those summer storms in other parts of the state.

i’ve been in a few willamette valley thunderstorms. they’ve occurred when the winds are backwards and a storm system with energy rotates down the western slope of the cascades. the cold ocean is the storm killer. looks like this system came from the south.
