It’s the time of year where everyone starts asking what I’m asking for Mother’s Day and what our plans are. Do I want another necklace with my kids initials on them? I cherish the ones I have but, I already have a few. Do I want to go to brunch with my family? Sure but we do that lots of Sundays. Honestly I don’t think Mother’s Day should be about anything materialistic. Being a mom is the greatest gift that exists. It’s hard, really hard, but it’s also rewarding in ways I never could have imagined. And I think it’s amazing that we have a whole day to celebrate moms and all the hard work that we do. So here is what is really on my Mothers Day gift ideas list this year:

Wine. There’s no better reward for hard work than wine. Or ‘mommy juice’ as it’s called in our house. And don’t just get me a bottle. I want the box. And there is no better boxed wine than Bota Box. I also love that there a mini versions equal to 3 glasses (aka the perfect amount) that are easy to go with us to different festivals, picnics, friends houses, etc. And don’t judge me but I’ve never been good at getting corkscrews out of bottles so everything about boxed wine makes my life easier.

is this viral marketing for 'bota box'? if not, the next time i'm trying to get as hosed up as an alienated suburban mom wants to on mother's day--which, as far as i can tell, is extremely hosed up--i'm gonna try one

Fun fact, down under they call boxed wine 'goon' and like to take it out the box to carry in the bag, called a 'goon bag'

Pleasantly surprised by that episode really. I was expecting something where they'd go after the movie in a pedantic or dismissive way with some comedic analysis, but this one was much more adorable.

my favorite amber opinion was the smart article she wrote for one of those online left things saying UBI is bad because 1950s housewives had it and were miserable, definitely not because they were all being beaten by their WW2 PTSD suffering husbands.

Interesting that they use straight up cult tactics of breaking down a person but because everyone involved in perpetrating the crime is a moron only interested in the sadism and dollar signs that there’s absolutely no imagination on what to make of their subjects, so they end up left to fend on their own, hence Brace mentioning the remission into drugs and suicide as being typical. These programs may be literally worse than actual cults on victim prognosis.

Yeah this was kinda my take on it too. The leadership of the British Empire pretty much entirely went to this kind of psychotic discipline and sexual abuse style of school and they turned out legions of officers willing to go out and conquer the world. I suspect the brainwashing poo poo really does work in creating people who will take abuse and follow orders, but you have to remember to do the bit where you rebuild them after breaking their spirit. Doesn't sound like the Synanon crowd ever got that far.

i disagree with this - i think it's just a certain basic humanism seeping through. i think she says things like that because she believes them to be true, and tbh i think 'some people join law enforcement out of a desire to protect others' is a very reasonable take

I don't think amber is some secret reactionary just really naive sometimes because while this statement may be true...the concept of protecting others those people have in mind is defending the right people from the bad people which is uh, a large part of the reason why cop culture is so hosed up.

wielding violence in the defense of civilisation is a right-wing concept yeah, but it's also an ideal that is compatible with a baseline level of human decency

like, jewell seems to have been a weirdo loser but also a basically decent man in his way, or at least not so awful a person that he deserved what he got. he believed some bizarre poo poo, but a lot of people do.

this is why i call cth's attitude here a basically humanist one - it's a willingness to empathise with and accept as fellow people even ones we don't like or approve of. basically a very nice episode, i think

It's cargo culting of the former by the latter, they know they're supposed to abuse children like it's a competitive sport and forget and don't know or care why (except for their own pleasure). That explains a lot about America, actually.
