I know this doesn't matter a toss, but still.

Corbs has a comfortable lead at the moment, at 47% to Rosena's 32.2%. Dawn is in last with 5.3% so people could probably vote for Dawn.

It was just people wanting us to roll back rights, thinking that if they leaked to the media that we were going to do it, that somehow we would therefore do it. And therefore it was important that the party also had voices saying we are behind GRA reform.”

Dunno if this has been discussed, but it seems pretty good to me. I still want Momentum to try and secure internal Labour elections for the Left, but so far that's all they've done when they were pitched as much more of a community group. Mobilising people to peacefully resist evictions is perfect.

This is exactly what Momentum should be doing. Helping people on the ground in real ways is how facist orgs get mindshare before being in any way capable of taking power, so why not the Left?

It likely is that, but doing the most :effort: thing possible on GRA reform and saying you still need multiple medical officials signing off but now it's £100 instead of £140 feels incredibly on brand for this government.

Face masks could be giving people Covid-19 immunity, researchers suggest

Mask wearing might also be reducing the severity of the virus and ensuring that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic

By Georgina Hayes 12 September 2020 • 5:00pm

Face masks may be inadvertently giving people Covid-19 immunity and making them get less sick from the virus, academics have suggested in one of the most respected medical journals in the world.

The commentary, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, advances the unproven but promising theory that universal face mask wearing might be helping to reduce the severity of the virus and ensuring that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic.

If this hypothesis is borne out, the academics argue, then universal mask-wearing could become a form of variolation (inoculation) that would generate immunity and “thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere” as the world awaits a vaccine.

It comes as increasing evidence suggests that the amount of virus someone is exposed to at the start of infection - the “infectious dose” - may determine the severity of their illness. Indeed, a large study published in the Lancet last month found that “viral load at diagnosis” was an “independent predictor of mortality” in hospital patients.

Wearing masks could therefore reduce the infectious dose that the wearer is exposed to and, subsequently, the impact of the disease, as masks filter out some virus-containing droplets.

If this theory bears out, researchers argue, then population-wide mask wearing might ensure that a higher proportion of Covid-19 infections are asymptomatic.

Better still, as data has emerged in recent weeks suggesting that there can be strong immune responses from even mild or asymptomatic coronavirus infection, researchers say that any public health strategy that helps reduce the severity of the virus - such as mask wearing - should increase population-wide immunity as well.

I was thinking about a variation of this earlier today: that wearing a face mask properly will also give some protection from seasonal flu, since the typical strain usually has a preferred 'up the nose' temperature that it multiplies at. Wearing a mask and bathing your face in blistering mouth air all day is likely to raise the temperature of your nose somewhat, which will interfere with whatever process a virus multiplies by, which I can't remember because it's been a loooong time since GCSE Biology.
It won't do anything for the shitwits who keep their masks below their nose, which is a bonus, frankly.

Kind of. It unfortunately applies with the caveat that wearing a mask primarily stops the virus going outward to other people. Masks still remain relatively ineffective at stopping the virus coming in.

You can wear all the masks you like but if every other dickhead in the shop is infected and coughing on the produce, it'll barely make a difference.

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
I have noticed as I go about my business outside and as mask wearing in shops has finally become compulsory in Wales, that those not wearing masks when out and about who I can see just walking around 'normally' and unmasked outside do tend to give me a wider berth when possible when they see me in a mask - eg I went for a masked walk up alongside the river both Saturday and Sunday and there's a narrow path.
Yesterday it was like Piccadilly Circus - never normally that busy.
I noticed people just doing the normal people-passing on the narrow bit ahead of me, but when I came along they would do their best to squash into a side or go back or forward a few paces where there were some wider bits of the path. So me wearing my mask seems to have a deterrent effect on other people, getting them to practice a little more social distancing than they might otherwise. Of course, I might just smell :D (JOKE!!!)

Not to mention that there's huge amounts of good to be done helping people navigate the intentionally hostile system of benefits/laws that might help them. Just helping people appeal their evictions and claim the benefits they're entitled to is a great help even before you get to blocking baliffs with human chains and live-streaming evictions for the media attention/fundraising.

They are different and complementary. Any time the explanation involving malice is _simpler_ than the one involving incompetence, then malice becomes more the way to bet.

Also worth noting is that Occam's razor is "when there are competing hypotheses for the same prediction, select the solution with the fewest assumptions" not "the simplest explanation is most likely the right one", otherwise 'God did it" and "there are two genders" become correct statements because they're nice and simple, but both make massive assumptions.

e: ^^ Like in that case, "the Tories want to help the country, they're just very bad at it" contains far more assumptions than "they self select for the worst possible people."
