If I had the strength to do that and the money to replace the gate without a second thought, there'd be a six pack of spare gates in the garage and some welders on retainer. Yes, I think a ladder and getting a ride would have been the less insane solution. This happened to Ovechkin before a Capitals game a few years ago, and even the crazy Russian instinct to dangerously kludge things was overcome by reason. https://twitter.com/russianmachine/status/814585280053280769

One morning when I lived in an apartment my ride to the airport couldn't open the car gate and I couldn't open the pedestrian gate so I just tossed my bags over and climbed it demonstrating very succinctly that the gate did absolutely nothing besides make white people think the complex was classy.
