BTW, I love this bit. Sean tweets some random thing, everybody goes nuts for a week, then NMS pays it off. Its not up-its-own-rear end too much, and its a fun little game.

All of that notwithstanding that 4 years later they're still adding FREE content to this game.

Scurvy survival mechanic confirmed. Seek out citrus biomes and construct vitamin extractors.

But I agree, Sean's update tweets are good value.

There's already land, underwater, and underground, and sometimes mountains/highlands are different, I think.

The next part is called Origins, does that mean I have to start over for the true experience?

Oh well, it doesn't matter. I think I've always restarted after every expansion anyway.

Nobody knows. Usually I recommend starting over only if you haven't played in several major updates, but one would hope there will be a path for established players to experience the new content.

Of course no one knows what is actually getting released so I'm just guessing.

I just thought "oranges" for "origins" because of that Trump thing from a while ago. The old PPP dialup window features you connecting to the internet as represented by the earth. So... connecting back to the origin world of the traveller(s)? In a more technical sense that could mean the introduction of cities instead of just tiny outposts. It could also just mean a new quest where you jump 10 times and get random comms for all I know.

They improved the netcode. You can now play by dial up. That's the whole expansion.

I’m getting caught up in the hype. I’m tempted to buy it for PC (already have it for PS4 but I barely use that console).
Does it run well on PC? Are there any reputable Steam key stores, or is direct the best?

It definitely runs far better than it did at launch. At higher settings it stresses CPUs a decent amount and it takes up a surprising amount of texture memory for a game with relatively simple graphics, but it scales down fairly well for lower power machines.

I generally treat anything on isthereanydeal.com as legit although there's a few on there I don't recognise.

King Faraday
May 22, 2009

Oh I forgot those deal sites freak me out with their warnings about which countries the unlock works in. Sean’s being super genuine and grateful on the ol’ Twitter so I may as well just spend the extra tenner.

I’m interested to see how it’ll run, my PC is decent but some of the things you mention make it sound like there’s some complexities in there that’ll challenge any machine.

Party Boat

I think if you're used to how the game runs on PS4 then playing it on a decent PC will be a step up. It feels like the game's remaining performance foibles such as pop in for some foliage when you move too quickly is something that's just inherent to the engine and can't really be solved with extra power. Although maybe Origins will fix it, who knows!

I will say that when I moved it from my external usb 3.0 drive to an internal NVMe SSD my load times went from 5 minutes to less than 1. I have a 4th gen i7 and a Nvidia 1660 card and it works great on my system.

Pretty solid update, looking forward to hopping in and seeing all the new stuff.

quote:

  • Trade economies have been rebalanced, so that the economy will be less affected by the mass selling of non-specialist items.
  • Added diminishing returns to resource extractors, so that after building a large number of extractors in one place, the amount extracted by each new extractor is slightly less.

Sounds like no more market bombing with the Cobalt and mega resource farms are not going to be as good.

I'm surprised and happy that the portal interference is gone.

Roman

Maybe this was a thing before and I didn't notice or did it wrong, but all controller remapping is removed from in-game and just uses the Steam remapper, and it actually works now. Finally I can sprint on left stick.

If there's anything I felt needed to be patched out, it's people spending hours playing the game building functional things.
