Lapsed Catholics are a huge part of that group, but I think most still consider themselves sort of Catholic. That doesn't even necessarily imply the guy is a zoophile or anything, repression of sexual feelings in general (even the traditional heteronormative repression of straight people) leads to those feelings bubbling up anyway in strange and nonsensical or "queer" ways. So no I don't think it was equating bestiality with homosexuality, which would be pretty awful.
