yea if the new Civ model was a Paradox style 'here's some small DLC, every so often we'll have a big expansion thing but it's mostly just small stuff you can grab as you want, and that means Civ as a base game will last a long time' it'd be a smart move I think.

Rimusutera

I think this model is mostly a fix to the blandness that was buying individual Civs paced out without much content besides maybe a weird scenario, which I think is less grabbing of people's attention in the latter's case. Instead of "here's a busted Civ as a standalone DLC, it comes also with this togglable game mode that adds [insert whacky fun here]" seems like a lot more guaranteed fun for your money, since scenarios often lack replayability.

They're tied together. In individual packs based on the Civs, or as a DLC pass that gets you everything.

Also, as someone who was skeptical, I highly recommend secret societies. It is a lot of fun to mess around with the combination of abilities you can get. Rough Rider Teddy with the Owls of Minerva is the Suzerain of all city states essentially.

I'm not really using the other game modes but I can't give up secret societies now that I'm so used to the extra governor promotions. Usually I can do a build order of scout, scout, settler and by the time the settler is finished, I've already got Magnus with the Provision promotion, because the scouts have gotten me two or three promotions by that point.

Secret societies is an awesome game mode - so much fun, and the extra governor bonuses really smooth out the early game.

Yeah, is the only one I feel I might enjoy. I dont like disasters all that much (I play on level 2) and those dramatic eras seems too dramatic

Hmm let's see how some of this new stuff look--

quote:

Statue of Zeus
Requirements: Must be built adjacent to an Encampment with a Barracks building and on Flat land.
Grants 3 Archers, 3 Spearmen, and a Battering Ram. +50% Production towards anti-cavalry units. +3 Gold per turn.

Um, I think I know what wonder I'm rushing every single game as Zulu :stare:

This is 440 units of production as a reward for building a 540+ production wonder. Certainly it's cheaper to slap in Agoge and hard build these units?

Too bad it's a production bonus to anti-cav

Purely hypothetically, if one wanted a game with as much Rome as possible, which civs would one add as AI players? Obviously Rome, Byzantium, Germany, and Russia. I guess also the Ottomans. Are there any other obvious candidates? I guess one could always go for regional hegemonies like China and Aztec to round it out.

Anyway, this is turning into 'people that the Romans fought' and less "more Romans". Rome, Byzantines, Ottomans, Russia, Germany, France all count as "Rome" claimants so you got a 6 player game rounded out right there.

First impressions with Gaul and the Dramatic Ages.

* I have never had such a boner for hills and mines.
* The Gaesatae might be good for early conflicts, but the thing I noticed most was immediate +4 era score for UU out of the gate!
* It's definitely harder to plan districts when you exclude the inner ring, but since they don't get adjacency from each other anyway it doesn't feel too bad. You just NEED MORE MINES.
* The Oppidum adjacency makes for some fiddly placement
* I've had one golden age so far. The card made it super easy to get a Great Prophet, which was nice.
* Neighboring Norway had a dark age, but the free cities troops fought off my vampire and they just rejoined Norway anyway. Might be more interesting when I have a bigger military and/or closer borders.

Unrelated but I spawned next to Paititi and it is baller af.

edit: Holy hell those dark ages hurt! Just had one where 7/8 civs got dark ages and it is CHAOS. I was in the middle of stomping my way through Norway and Japan and everything around my army went free cities. Trying to fight my way back to my border to see if I can get any kind of loyalty going with the closest cities, because others I reconquered just flip back really quick.

I believe the units created by Statue of Zeus are maintenance free, I built it and I don't think my GPT went down, in fact it went up because of the extra 3. Besides, if you want to talk policy cards making things cheaper to build, just be Autocracy and have the extra production to wonders card from State Workforce civic. Monument to the Gods pantheon too, especially if you want to build other stuff.

Of course, given that it also requires a Barracks in an Encampment, you're probably still right if all you want is the units, but it's also fun to build wonders.

EDIT: I just had a thought, anyone tried building this as Greece yet? Would be pretty sick if it gave Hoplites instead of spearmen.

Canada joined an emergency against me and by the time I got down to him with my army he was down to 2/5 cities. He’d lost three to dark ages INCLUDING his capital. Just nuts. Dramatic ages are dramatic. I’ve managed to keep golden all game but I’m out of people to conquer on my continent so I’m a little worried now...

Gaul is super fun but city placement is hosed. ESPECIALLY harbors.

I thought it applies to aqueducts because I couldn’t build one but it turns out there was just 2 nitre in the spots I needed. That city needs neighborhoods.

Wait, can you put neighbourhoods in the inner ring?

Also, the civ achievement for Gaul is killing a tank with your UU warrior replacement. Uhhhhhhh

This is more doable than you think, although it'll require some fiddling around with the flanking, being near other units, some promotions, probably a great general. I've heard someone say, though I don't have proof, that you can get that UU to 100 strength.

A tank has 80 strength. Gaesatae 20 base +10 lower base attack +4 flanking +12 Leader bonus +17 army +10 urban warfare promotion (fighting in district) +5 great general = 78 combat strength.

Created units will always give the UU version if the UU replaces the normal unit in the line-up. I can't recall, but I think the only UU that doesn't replace the normal unit is the Maryannu Chariot Archer, which used to replace Heavy Chariot but was made a separate bonus unit in Gathering Storm.
