Quick, find me an NYT opinion piece on how the internet is all about harvesting clicks and trolling for attention, and that's why us newspapers have nothing to fear from it. Bonus points if it is in the mid-later 1990s I think you could do an opinion page that was good, but it'd have to be "how you'd explain an opinion page to a fourth grade classroom" rather than its literal opposite. Something like "find some people who are super knowledgeable/smart/good writers and have them opine on stuff now and then"

Opinion columist should not be a job, but good opinion articles can exist. In postponing Guston exhibition, the National Gallery and three other museums have made a terrible mistake I feel like the article informs while laying out the position of the author, plus the paper actually fact checked it before publishing. They label it "perspective" not opinion so you don't compare it to the poo poo they publish under Opinions.

I could see a good writer being able to package up the incomplete thoughts of subject matter experts into policy recommendations while fact-checking what they're being told. That's very different than the current model of "Some rear end in a top hat gets paid $325,000 a year to act like s/he knows everything or just parrot the party line"
