Yep. Had to pay £70 last year to have my ears syringed at Specsavers only to find out that wasn't the problem (they still don't know what the problem is but won't investigate further until I hear back from the dentist, who have yet to contact me about an 'emergency' appointment I made back in March).

Their excuse was that syringing has been found to be 'unsafe' and they can't afford to buy the new, safer vacuum things yet.

Even more fun is that a growing number of authorities are starting to offer steroid injections for RSI as a paid optional extra. Some places have shunted it to paid private work entirely, some have offered it as paid where the doctor says it isn't necessary, or where you want to jump the queue. Which just massively incentivises the authority to say it isn't necessary, when it is because I just want to play fall guys without my arm hurting :(

Here's some of what I was thinking of, from the same site as the camps one.

Cecil Rhodes posted:

Why should we not form a secret society with but one object the furtherance of the British Empire and the bringing of the whole uncivilised world under British rule for the recovery of the United States for the making the Anglo-Saxon race but one Empire

Recil Chodes posted:

I contend that we are the first race in the world, and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race. Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimen of human being, what an alteration there would be in them if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence...if there be a God, I think that what he would like me to do is paint as much of the map of Africa British Red as possible.

I'm certain I've seen more explicit statements from him in correspondence, but what he wanted to do would have the end result of being more like what the US did to Native Americans or what Britain did to Australia more than what Britain did to, say, India or actual in existence Africa. A centuries long White Africa program to ensure Anglo dominance over the entirety of the continent. Absolutely unhinged.

And the thing is, they're triangulating. You know it, I know it, everyone knows that in practice they can say this poo poo to appeal to a demographic and they're never ever going to have to implement it.

But here's why it's poo poo:

1. Labour *should* be strongly for this. It should not be a problem for keith to come out and have said this before now.
2. If they come out for it now, *Labour* will look like the ones cynically trying to scoop up votes
3. The lib dems having said this first is going to split the labour vote, even with everything I said at the top there. Starmer has left an open goal and they've taken a shot at it.

It's also the Great Replacement conspiracy, but 'good' this time. Once they're at a critical mass of [today's BAME population + 1] they'll take over." Rhodes straight up said "let's create an NWO and replace everyone with Anglo-Saxons, once we're at a critical mass we'll take over."

Is this true? I always understood European imperialism to be genocidal in a slightly different way to Nazi Germany in that Rhodes et al wanted to establish British (or French or whatever) dominance over an obedient racialised servant class, rather than eradicate them entirely. Displacement of the local powers that be sure, but not wholesale death camp stuff - just state terrorism via good old concentration camp.

Like, I picture their overall goal as being one of those lords from racist old films who sit on their golden throne being wafted by impossibly beautiful attendants with big leaf fans. There was always a fetishisation of indigenous culture combined with a big white saviour complex, which strikes me as seeing the native populations as infantilised 'noble savages' requiring civilising and a big appropriative impulse, rather than a desire to see them all dead. Someone needed to waft the fan after all! Africa, India, and China seen distinct from the USA, Canada, and Australia in that regard - the fetishisation of local cultures as part of the process of imperialism appears to have prevented the establishment of things like extremely lovely residential school systems, and you have nothing like the same kind of complete eradication of indigenous traditions - the imperial occupants almost appear to have existed as parasites rather than open predators, probably due to their vast numerical disadvantage.

I'm thinking aloud here, so take it all with a pinch of salt, but I feel like there's something worth thinking about in that.

Specifically with Rhodes, and this was true of much of white South African political thinking, was establishing whites as the superior people while harnessing native labour surplus to serve the engine of economic growth to expand the settler class while restricting Africans to "native places" removed from white society. Of course this is Apartheid 101 but much recent historical scholarship has focused on the evolution of these same policies from the Cape Colony era through the Union to eventual full Apartheid and it is very much a trend of restricting native land rights to create a landless working class who's labour power could then be harnessed by white settlers as agricultural labour - this wasn't necessarily unique to South Africa as similar land title confiscations and native reserves where deployed for the same purposes in Kenya. This was very much a feature of settler colonialism though and towards the late Victorian era / early 20th century there was a shift more towards high paternalism that often put these settler led initiatives in conflict with the colonial office who preferred beefing up traditional native rulers powers to use them to harness labour through traditional concepts of corvee.

Rhodes attitude is probably best summed up in his speech introducing the Glen Grey Act that was deliberately structured to remove common traditional land titles to create a native labour surplus to benefit white commercial farmers:

Cecil Rhodes posted:

There is, I think, a general feeling that the natives are a distinct source of trouble and loss to the country. Now, I take a different view. When I see the labour troubles that are occurring in the United States, and when I see the troubles that are going to occur with the English people in their own country on the social question and the labour question, I feel rather glad that the labour question here is connected with the native question, for I see that at any rate we do not have here what has lately occurred in Chicago, where, on account of some question as to the management of the Pullman Car Company, the whole of these labour quarrels have broken out, and the city has been practically wrecked.

This is what is going on in the older countries on account of the masses as against the classes getting what they term their rights, or, to put it into plain English, those who have not, trying to take from those who have. If they cannot get it by what might be termed Irish legislation, they mean to get it by physical force. That is another aspect of government by the people. The proposition that I would wish to put to the House is this, that I do not feel that the fact of our having to live with the natives in this country is a reason for serious anxiety. In fact, I think the natives should be a source of
great assistance to most of us. At any rate, if the whites maintain their position as the supreme race, the day may come when we shall all be thankful that we have the natives with us in their proper position
. We shall be thankful that we have escaped those difficulties which are going on amongst all
the ; old nations of the world...

The present life [of the native African] is very similar to that of the young man about town who lounges about the club during the day and dresses himself for a tea-party in the afternoon, and in the evening drinks too much, and probably finishes up with immorality. These native young men are not in a position to marry and settle down, because they have not got cows. They are a nuisance to every district in the Transkei, to every magistrate in the Transkei, and to every location. We want to get hold of these young men and make them go out to work, and the only way to do this is to compel them to pay a certain labour tax. But we must prepare these people for the change. Every black man cannot have three acres and a cow, or four morgen and a commonage right. We have to face the question, and it must be brought home to them that in the future nine- tenths of them will have to spend their lives in daily labour, in physical work, in manual labour. This must be brought home to them sooner or later.

Apartheid South Africa being a white country for white people built on excluding blacks and isolating whites but completely reliant on a captive labour force composed of Black Africans was something Govan Mbeki, one of the bigger theory heads in the ANC, continually emphasised in this writigs

In the aftermath of the 1981 Brixton riot Moore interviewed elderly white residents of Lambeth on their experience of crime, the police, immigration and politics.[10] Moore wrote: "The native population of Lambeth feels little natural sympathy with the West Indian arrivals. Without having any arrogant or dogmatic theory of racial superiority, the old people of Lambeth can see with their own eyes that they are surrounded by people more primitive than they, who lack their respect for law and privacy".
...
Moore was a critic of David Cameron's Conservative Party modernisation strategy, that he stated embraced "subjects which they had previously ceded to the Left, like health, welfare, the environment and schools", which he believed had supported the interests of government organisations rather than that of the consumer. In particular, Moore has been critical of the National Health Service, which he considers "a terrible organisation".[23][24]
...
In August 2015, Moore received media attention and criticism after he wrote an article for The Spectator about the 2015 Labour Party leadership election, titled "Have Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall got the looks for a leadership contest?", in which he wrote "there is an understanding that no leader—especially, despite the age of equality, a woman—can look grotesque on television and win a general election" and discussed the looks of the two female candidates in detail.
...
In April 2017 he authored an article for the Telegraph which advocated "a bonfire of green regulations" and a return to fossil fuels to improve the British economy after Brexit.[34]
...
In August 2019 he was criticised for suggesting that Olivia Colman had a "distinctly leftwing face" which cast a doubt in his mind on her ability to play the role of the Queen in the upcoming new season of The Crown.[35]

Lipstick Apathy
There's no way University students can stay in halls over Christmas. You think Universities, having been royally screwed financially, can lay on Christmas dinner for 3000 and simply absorb the costs from the fees already paid? If the halls are catered accommodation, then there're no facilities for students to cook their own food and very limited space to store anything. Kitchenettes are only for making tea and toast, not three meals a day for every single resident.

If students aren't in halls, but rent privately, then good luck enforcing that. I really don't think landlords are going to be scurrying around checking that the students are still there, there's a huge risk they might ruin their plausible deniability about the borderline dangerous state of the property.

I'm waiting for some enterprising student group to decide that if cancelling someone is wrong, then being present is right. Constantly being present. Day and night, in shifts, just permanently and loudly engaging with the university.
