Was that just propaganda i was fed, or was the USSR just badly managed enough that basic American prosperity was unbelievable? This is some propoganda poo poo, as far as I can tell, from talking to people who lived under communism. It's kind of like that dumbasses tweet from Cuba, where he takes a picture in front of a wall of cans labeled "beans" and "tomatoes" in a fully stocked grocery store as some proof of how horrible communism is. Not having 20 different brands produced by two conglomerates is horrifying somehow. According to my Balkan father in law there were sometimes shortages but the overall the quality of the products was much higher than what you find in stores now - and this dude is super picky about the best quality local food, so I believe him. So you only had a choice to get "butter" wrapped in white paper, but it was some local grass fed poo poo. This might not be as true in other countries, I don't know, after all Russian salad exists. Another friend (again from a Balkan country) told me that when he visited Hungary on a school trip in the 80s they were all blown away - like Kruschev or the defector in your story or whoever - because there were actually different brands of things available which made it feel hugely prosperous. When he told me that story, he made it clear that he was a teenager outside of his home country for the first time. So there might be some truth to it, after all, but when it's presented without any context it really comes across like pure propoganda. People in communist countries had grocery stores full of food available to them. The fact you can go buy frozen shrimp caught by slaves in Thailand for pennies is, I guess, a triumph of capitalism in some ways but gently caress that poo poo. Pictured below: mismanagement of food distribution under Communism (also extremely on topic thread material lol) https://twitter.com/bennyjohnson/status/1174871396855382016?s=20 IAMKOREA has issued a correction as of 07:00 on Sep 27, 2020 |

IAMKOREA posted:Not having 20 different brands produced by two conglomerates is horrifying somehow. This is kinda true on a psychological level. Everybody agrees that the quality of goods was better in the USSR (no planned obsolescence, home appliances meant to last for decades), but the Western storefronts just get under your skin. Letting global advertisers in was like a splash of color in a socrealist-dominated media landscape.

Planned obsolescence was invented in the 50s but mostly manifested in people buying new things because they wanted to (new stuff is coming out every year and being marketed as being fresh and in style) and were able to with greater disposable income. In the last few decades it's because things are designed to break before the end of their lifetime and people are compelled to buy new things whether the money is there or not.
