I mean, if you're a successful actress and you go out of the house in a skirt and without underwear, knowing that paparazzi are just waiting for opportunities like this and that it has happened many times before, then there's really nobody you can blame for it but yourself.

Hmm, if not for the random element, I think I would agree with you there. There absolutely are people who blow a hundred dollars on booster packs at a time in hopes of getting something rare that is worth even more to sell, I know that much. The idea of selling you gameplay elements in a box where you don't know what you get until well after you've paid for it just doesn't sit well with me, no matter what format it comes in.

:same:

I only realized it when someone brought up the Mr. X handler DLC and I went to look for it and saw like $400 worth of stuff. There's nothing predatory about selling a lot of purely optional cosmetic DLC that is never once advertised to you in game. If you have a compulsion to buy every piece of chandelier cosmetics because the option is there then I guess you should never walk into a store ever. Also who gives a poo poo about decorating your room in MHW, it's free to capture a bunch of Anglerfish and let them flop around your floor which is the best decoration in the game. This discussion sucks.

I also refuse to believe that anyone complaining about MHW’s cosmetic DLC has actually played the game. I dumped over a hundred hours into it before I even realized they existed, and that was only because they were mentioned in this thread. They’re literally the least obtrusive cosmetic DLC I’ve ever seen.

im not going into the argument anymore cos ive made my point now, but dont do this. trying to throw out peoples viewpoints because "they arent real fans" or "they dont actually play the game" is a pretty stupid position to take and one some real gross people use in the same manner to shout down concerns from people who think maybe a game shouldnt have a homophobic joke in it. i own mhw on ps4 and pc, including the dlc on pc, and i have around 300 hours in the game across both platforms. if you disagree with someone then just disagree with them, dont try and justify it in your head that they dont care and are kicking up a stink for the sake of it and its not because they also play the game.

RIP Duelyst
Just finished Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Initially I totally can't get into it, because people kept on comparing it to Hollow Knight and holy poo poo it's not even close, especially the combat part is way too light & floaty. But little by little I actually am able to actually enjoy the game. And the game's abilities actually ramp up so fast, like by endgame you're so goddamn different from when you've started.

Funnily enough, 1 of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me personally is the food preparing part. For those who don't know, food in this game is not purely healing/mana items, but also grants you a permanent bonus the 1st time you use one. So I'm happily scouring the world searching for recipes & ingredients and such, especially with such good automap. The fact that RNG drops feel fair, and you can actually get whatever you're farming for in a short time with high enough Luck skill feels good as well.

So any other games like that? Bear in mind that I can't actually get into MHW even with trying all weapons and such. I just really need a good story and such to tie it all together, not just pure grinding all the time.

Bloodstained is a sendup of the Igarashi Castlevanias (SOTN, Rondo of Blood etc.) and you can play them if you have a PS4. Unfortunately none of The Good Ones seem to have ever been made available on Steam.

I'm also keeping my eye on Vigil: The Longest Night which might be good, who knows!

I can tune a fish.
My last word on it is that I feel there's a double standard at play. If I said I didn't care about game balance, and therefore P2W items are fine and in fact meaningless - after all, you don't have to buy them, they're totally optional - you would think I was a loving lunatic. Because gameplay is the game, period, anything else is set dressing. Anything that ruins the gameplay is anathema to the game as a whole, anything that fucks with the set dressing.....eehhhhhh who cares.

I pointedly don't view games that way. And I don't find it fair that while you get to have all of your fun for a single one time fee, I often need to spend much, much more in order to have all of mine. Solely because it was arbitrarily decided that cosmetic items weren't important enough - not gameplay enough - to receive the same gut check "oh gently caress this, you can't do that" call that P2W stuff does so they can be freely exploited by rear end in a top hat companies.

USING MHW SOLELY AS A QUICK AND DIRTY EXAMPLE, you can go ahead and play "Monster Hunter World, the game about hitting increasingly larger monsters with increasingly larger sticks" without much fuss. Just pay Capcom their $20/50/whatever and go nuts. There is no extra weapon selection behind a paywall, no extra depth to the palicos only unlocked by throwing down some more money, nothing is explicitly withheld from you or externalized from the game itself. You can fully engage with the mechanics - the mechanics you've decided are the most important to you personally - without paying any extra. Meanwhile, if I wanted to play "Monster Hunter World, the game about decorating a home inbetween hitting increasingly larger monsters with increasingly larger sticks" then in all likelihood I would feel the lovely obligation to pony up for the extra decor junk because my equally valid way of playing the game has been co-opted to rake in extra $$$. My experience is artificially degraded, left intentionally incomplete until I elect to fill in the blanks or give up.

So yeah, it loving sucks when I say "actually this is unfair and messed up, please don't brush it off or minimize it" and the response I hear is "well I personally don't care about that stuff, so, yawn". Great for you if your enjoyment of a game isn't affected, but mine often is and it blows.

God, you vindictive bitch, why can't I ever have any "me" time

The biggest problem with MTX, cosmetics, and etc. is that the video game industry is one of the most rapidly evolving and blatant examples of the slippery slope argument at work, and "X doesn't bother me" or "Y isn't as bad as Z" doesn't discount that X, Y, and Z are all bad in the first place, and the apathy is exactly why they keep happening and getting worse.

mycot posted:

Adding an achievement for petting a dog sufficiently causes us to focus on the reward instead of the action itself, thus undermining the simple enjoyment that petting a dog should provide on its own. Supergiant has failed.

Been messing around with Game Pass and one major highlight was Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. Man, this game is good.

As a bad fighting game player, I appreciate the game's easy controls and how each character has a well defined archetype (Ranger Slayer has a bow and likes to zone, Dragon Yellow Ranger has zord armor and hits like a tank). The story mode is pretty decent with evil Rangers trying to conquer the universe and random Rangers teleporting in for surprise fights. The gameplay loop of losing and learning the character to win the rematch is awesome.

The game is a bit buggy on Game Pass plays much better on Steam.

Beat Jedi Fallen Order. A solid 8/10 game, definitely a babby's first Sekiro but that's exactly what I was looking for. The combat wasn't as tight, the bosses fewer and not as memorable, and it is a little silly in a Stars War game to have your lightsaber deflected by a guy with a billy club but oh well. There were a few issues with the difficulty, I thought. Because it's fairly easy, when it does get rough it felt like the rest of the game hadn't trained me for those moments. Respawn knows its movement though, because the running around felt good, though the number of sliding sequences definitely got over the top. I was a little surprised at how well designed the levels were, though. Well, mostly one of the levels, Zeffo, the others are considerably more linear but still cool and the structure of the game has you revising planets as you unlock more of your abilites.

Or rather, it would be an 8/10 if it weren't an unoptimized mess. Dathomir and one particular section if that first planet chugged for unfathomable reasons which you really don't want in a precision game like that. Some very noticeable glitches with the enemy models too, getting stuck on things, juddering, sometimes loading in literally on top of you. I know the game was rough when it launched and it seems they didn't patch it at all!

It varies basically randomly, which often speaks of porting issues, but the technical problems are definitely common enough to be worth taking into account if you're interested in purchasing the game. In one playthrough I watches, the amount of glitches (mostly graphical, some not) was crazy. It wasn't that bad on my end, but it can be and there's no real way to tell what you'll get before you try.
