The last I checked, Teddy’s wind field was 410 miles from the center for TS force winds and 140 miles from the center for hurricane force which is just enormous

New Hampshire's rivers are at 10% regular flow levels. Several forest fires have broken out. One of which fire crews spend most of the day to bring under control.

it's actually kind of eerie how little it has rained (eastern upstate New York here) in the last month, really highlights how you don't think about it much until it's abnormal. now I notice it every day

Every time I have visited Vermont/NH I have noticed how brutally humid it is. Even in January when it's 10 degrees and clear, it's somehow way more humid than any other cold place I've been. It's like you can feel the freezing moisture in the air just biting at you. If it's drying out there then I think we finally killed the planet. rip

Pryor on Fire posted:If it's drying out there then I think we finally killed the planet. rip Nah the planet's gonna be fine. It's our civilization and most of the plant and animal species that are at risk. On Earth's time scale, what we do is gonna determine if Earth wakes up tomorrow morning and goes, "ugh gently caress what did I drink last night I'm never doing that again."

That's a stupid, naive platitude. If we kill all the species and make vast swaths of the globe uninhabitable then we have killed the planet for humans. Who gives a poo poo about the fungus on the rocks five million years from now? I certainly do not.

Who gives a poo poo about the fungus on the rocks five million years from now? I certainly do not. It's not a stupid, naive, platitude - it's a pedantic platitude, the best kind. There are also many, many species more than simple microorganisms that'll probably survive a climate catastrophe and even accompanying nuclear war. Trabisnikof posted:Pretty sure the attitude of gently caress the other species, I only care about humans got us into this mess Indeed. Humans depend on the Earth, while the Earth does not depend on humans.

H.P. Hovercraft posted:destroying our modern civilization isn't equivalent to making humans extinct Yeah, Humans are extremely widespread and adaptable. Barring some sort of event that makes it literally impossible to survive (such as being completely scorched and all the water evaporated off into space), humans will likely find some niche to continue to live off of.
