For Real!
Yakuza is more focused than GTA and funnier. I found the tone of Yakuza much harder to read with the language barrier but i got a fun 30 hours out of Zero and have read people getting triple that

This is a very weird analogy but in some ways you can look at it like a heavily-evolved River City Ransom. You have a "free roam" in a town that's bustling with life and businesses you can cater to (including shops, minigames and hidden collectibles), as well as thugs who decide picking a fight with you is somehow a good idea.

The game has an extremely serious TV drama-esque storyline following Kazuma Kiryu as he tries to balance being an honorable member of a Yakuza clan with being a good person, while various political-style conspiracies unfold within the criminal underworld that threaten his clan and his loved ones. The storyline generally has to go to certain locations that aren't accessible in free roam as a sort of one-off, these enclosed locations where you fight random mooks who come at you with blades, bats, firearms and couches, generally culminating in a "boss battle" of some sort. The storyline is surprisingly engrossing and its cast of characters (Kiryu, other clan members etc.) are pretty endearing in their own way. While playing them in order isn't necessarily strictly required (some later titles spoil ending stuff from earlier titles but it's largely inconsequential), 0 through 6 are somewhat of a continual storyline (Judgment only makes a really minor blink-and-you-miss-it reference to Kiryu in one of the side missions but that's it, and Yakuza 7 no longer follows Kiryu and is considered a clean starting point). 0 takes place in the 80s when Kiryu is just getting started as a debt collector for the Yakuza. 1 mainly takes place in 2005 and every follow-up title is a few years after the previous one, with its Japanese release date being the approximate time the game in question takes place in. Kamurocho (a fictional version of Tokyo's Red Light District) is kind of the focal point of the whole series and you can trace its evolution across the games (e.g. a construction area in one game has a finished building in the next), and technology/trends also follow as approrpiate to the year (e.g. cell phone styles used by characters in the games)

When the storyline gets to be too much you can do "side stories" which are usually a complete counter in tone to the storyline missions, generally being these absolutely goofy situations which may or may not involve fighting, some form of timing/memory game or other things. To give you an example of how ridiculous some of these side stories are, Yakuza 0 (which takes place in the 80s) has one where you help Steven Spielberg* shoot Michael Jackson's* Thriller music video (names changed), followed by an amicable dance-off with MJ in an upscale disco. A lot of these will involve something that's trending at least in Japanese society (post-Yakuza 0, Kiryu spends ten years in prison and is also somewhat of a boob so he has to have stuff that most people would consider basic explained to him, which is actually useful for Western audiences not familiar with certain things that are unique to Japan).

The games vary in terms of how much content they have with Yakuza 5 being seen as a particularly massive undertaking to 100%. Yakuza 0 is the best place to start and has a ton of content.

Yeah the load time elimination will mostly be a new titles thing. While there will still technically be load times it'll be fast enough that they can be concealed (e.g. a fade out/fade in will be enough time).

On the one hand, watch the Ratchet and Clank trailer. Every time Ratchet dives into a portal and ends up in another world, the bit where he's falling through the multiverse was a load point.

On the other hand, a number of games on that list also have to negotiate with servers and other players' consoles as part of entering a session, and that will always consume time no matter how fast storage gets.

You're not wrong that it's not explicitly specified and that's an issue. Probably from when you hit "Load Game" until you have control, but then which specific save you're loading (what area it's in) will impact this.

What save file, though? The area you're in when you load obviously matters, every RDR2 numbers I've seen have been completely different.

It's a Unity game and my experience is that Unity games with a lot of assets tend to have lovely load times. The Pillars of Eternity games fared similarly.

It's still a 5400rpm drive inside the One X.

Load times are also inconsistent based on data fragmentation and stuff like that.

My prediction is that real world load time elimination is going to be disappointing.

Many games have online components, GaaS components, matchmaking lobbies and other forces that bottleneck getting to the gameplay far more than asset loading — that stuff isn't going away in the coming generation.

We will see improvements on the asset loading part of games and I am excited about that, but instant resume means very little when you find yourself kicked back to a login screen for idling by the server.

Developers have always had the power to massively reduce load times, they've had other priorities. Asset loading speed is just a budget that you have and you can get fast loading by sending less over the pipe. The Ratchet and Clank demo was visually compelling but I don't understand how it was importantly different from jumping through portals in Portal (2007)/Portal 2(2011), or the rifts that Destiny 2 has become fond of.

I'm feeling cynical about this aspect of the pre-launch marketing because I remember when the OG Xbox came out with an HDD and similar claims of instant load times and constant asset streaming were made. It is very strange to see the exact same promises being made in news conferences 19 years later.

In the Portal games and Destiny 2, what's on the other side of the rift is the same as what's on the starting side, in terms of assets that need to be loaded, it's no different from stepping through a normal doorway. Both sides of the portal were pulled into RAM during the most recent load screen, which lets the portals work quickly but also limits the characteristics of the destination.

Look at the R&C video again- when he goes through a portal everything changes. The skybox is new, the landscapes and background props are new, the enemies and ambient life/bystanders are new, and the game can do it several times in quick succession. In Destiny 2 you can't, say, step into a portal on Io and end up on Nessus. Unless they fake it by including a small chunk of Nessus on the Io map so it's included in that load, but then you're stuck in that chunk and can't move on and go exploring the entire Nessus space.

Plus, you can imagine that later on in R&C you might have portals where you get to choose or control which world you're sent to, and they wouldn't be able to use predictive loads or cheat rooms for that.

How alone you really are
I'm finally getting around to playing Metro Exodus after picking it up on sale a few months back and I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. I've never played the previous games, but so far this game is gorgeous and really nails the post-apocalyptic atmosphere better than most games I've played. You really have to scavenge to survive and I'm enjoying the crafting system much more than 2TLOU. Although, I didn't fully understand the gun attachment system until recently and screwed up by not saving my attachments from a gun I swapped. Hopefully I can find another 4x scope elsewhere!

It's a nice change of pace to play a shooter where you're just not mowing down enemies and I enjoy having to properly prep and choose your shots. It also can get pretty creepy at times. Just got to the 2nd open world area and excited to see what's next!

I rewatched the gameplay trailer there are two portal mechanics. Purple portals and orange portals.

Orange portals in the trailer operate exactly like Portal 2 portals. They pull you to another place the same level, and allow you to bounce around the environment. Cool and mechanically different (this is a shooter not a momentum puzzler) but technically they seem to be essentially the same thing.

The purple portals, it's hard to tell exactly what's going on about that as far as how much is changing. In many cases, they spend so little time there, that it could be exactly like the "fake it by loading a chunk of Nessus on Io" scenario. The purple portals seem to have brief loading moments and then you are dumped into an environment and then into another loading moment and then another environment. If we'd stopped off at any of those, would we have been able to explore? Hard to say. As far as I can tell from the gameplay trailer, those moments of falling through the purple portals are fixed parts of the level design.

Sure, we can imagine that. But now you are comparing dreams to reality. We could imagine that about Portal 2 as well. We'd just be incorrect. It'll be interesting to see if I am wrong about this and there is an arbitrary portal travel mechanic that comes later in the game. That'd be cool.

I built a PC in 2011 with a 60gb SSD for the OS and another one with 120gb in preparation for Battlefield 3 (between both I paid almost 300€ haha).

That's exactly the point though, is that there is no 'fixed level design'. Such a concept no longer exists as far as PS5 exclusives go - the demonstration Cerny gave was that you can literally load textures and geometry into RAM as fast as a player can turn around, so it's only rendering right in front of you. It's very exciting, I absolutely cannot wait to see what TLOU style games play like without a spiral staircase every three feet.
