Disney isn't going to change poo poo. Tourism giants like Disney and the Vegas casinos were drawing up safety guidelines for a reopened environment before politicians even considered reopening them. They did not amass all that political power when they located WDW just to listen to civic spats between county regulators.

It's kind of interesting to see what Florida is willing to risk it's tourism industry's credibility on which Nevada is not. From what I can see, you can pack a Miami nightclub under this order.

So long as Disney continues to keep a Dapper Dans at every park, I don't think live atmosphere-entertainment is dead, but I think a bunch of guys on a balcony playing jazz-band soundtracks and the occasional standard isn't what they want. Interactivity is the key word right now, acts that can be flexible/improvisational and leave the guest with a story to tell. And what they do is great but it isn't that.

It sucks when a favorite thing that's been around for a long time like that leaves, though. I almost cried when Rod Miller retired from Disneyland, he was why I picked up learning piano.

There are other parks that still focus on live performers.

Dollywood actually does the "ambient" music performance thing really well -- when I was there last year, it seemed like there were live musicians everywhere in the park. It's mostly country and folk music, but there's a bit of jazz, blues, and even (a non-threatening to boomers style of) rock.

I don't remember if I've posted about it here before, but Silver Dollar City (also owned by Herschend Entertainment, and the sister park to Dollywood) is also great for this; ~4 small capacity theaters each with live shows running, a huge amphitheater, limited time engagements to bring hype, streetmosphere characters, cast members who are obviously enthused about their jobs. Combine all that with theming that's light years ahead of what typical regional theme parks bring, lots of tiny touches around the park similar to what Disney fans love to wax nostalgic over, and a really top notch collection of rides...SDC is a real treasure of a theme park and I love having it close. If you're ever in Missouri and fancy yourself a fan of themed entertainment, you owe yourself a trip.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but I don't think we have a general theme park thread.

Dollywood is a legit good theme park. The theming isn't to Disney levels, but what is? The landscaping is beautiful, and the ambience of the music and scenery gives it a nice Southern backwoods charm.

The coasters and rides are quite good for a park that size, and there's a surprisingly good variety of live music performances and a couple of decent restaurants, too.

The secret is to go on a weekday right after the kids go back to school, but before the leaves in the Smoky Mountains start to change colors. The park will be almost completely empty, but everything is still running. 95% of the other guests will be retired boomers, who are definitely not riding any of the big coasters.

When I visited last September, I think I only waited in line twice for a ride, both times less than five minutes. By early afternoon, every ride was walk-on, and most of them will let you stay on for a second ride when nobody's waiting.

I definitely recommend Dollywood to anyone who lives within a day's drive of Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. During the off-season, you can get some ridiculously good rates on AirBNB rentals, too. I'm looking forward to going back after covid-times.

I’m sure it’ll have initial downtime issues but there’s far fewer systems on this coaster and it isn’t going to have 9 trains running at the same time or however many Hagrid’s manages.

Is Dollywood your home park? Do you have any idea whats going on with Lightning Rod? I saw on twitter its down due to "upgrades" but its harder to find news about regional parks without dipping into TPR, and gently caress giving that guy traffic. Part of me thinks that its an "upgrade" to the launch system to make it "not break every 30 minutes"

I'd read a amusement/themed entertainment thread, but once you leave the Universal/Disney tier, everything is so regional its hard to have a single thread with active conversation. Honestly, this thread could probably use a re-name at some point, since its very irregularly about visiting WDW as a first timer, haha.

Not really my home park, but it's the closest "major" theme park to me, if you don't count Six Flags Atlanta, which is a garbage fire.

No idea what's going on with Lightning Rod. The first time I went to Dollywood, that was my first ride of the day. I figured "wooden coaster, no big deal". I didn't realize it was magnetically launched to Ludicrous Speed, or that it would pull quite so many lateral G's. It was an exciting ride, but I was honestly a little shaken afterward. It's the only thing I didn't go on at least twice.

All the Six Flags don't seem to have the best reps. Here at Six Flags New England, everything often caught on fire or coaster ride vehicles would just collide with each other. A guy unfortunately flew out of the Superman ride like 15 years ago and died. They've since renamed it to Bizarro.

Also there's a 100+ year old wooden roller coaster at Canobie Lake that stops so hard it has broken more than one of my friend's ribs.

Its back to Superman now! Not sure why, cause Bizarro had some unique theming compared to "Generic Six Flags Superman Coaster #12" but I've always been to fat to ride it so guess it doesn't matter!

That wooden coaster is a delight. The one year I worked for SpookyWorld when they were at Canobie (before they realized they hated us and ditched us to form their own event) we got to ride it one day before we started work and it was just the jankiest. So much fun getting hurt.

If I could fix one relatively meaningless thing about Six Flags, it would be to fix their completely nonsensical naming scheme. They have six different roller coasters with the name "Goliath," and they aren't even sort of related. 3 different B&M hypercoasters, a Batman clone, a wooden coaster, and a giant inverted boomerang. This is not limited to coasters or unthemed rides. There are also 2 different Harley Quinn Spinsanities. One of them is a Tourbillon, which is called Cyborg in another one of their parks. Also there are two just plain Spinsanities that are themselves different flats. It's mind boggling, although it does provide a decent excuse to learn the trade names of all these things.

:eng101: Technically, Goliath at SFMM was designed and build by Giovanola, not B&M who had left the company ten years earlier. Interestingly, Giovanola did a lot of the fabrication for B&M's early designs before they opened their own Euro production facility and basically hired Clermont Steel Fabricators full time to do their NA and some of their Asia production. It's actually really interesting how small the attraction construction industry is: as another example, one company, Mosely Erection, has put up every major ride at Carowinds since Drop Tower in the mid nineties and has also put up a lot of the big rides at SFOG, Dollywood, KD, and BGW.
