I’m curious how accurate the prevailing mythology is re: the military as a path to prosperity in that a large proportion of non-officer recruits come from underserved demographics my gut instinct is that it would be a bare plurality at best but I’m sure someone has looked into this

Also poor people of other colors tending to come from more urban areas. I think the key is that it's people poor enough to have trouble funding college or trade school out of pocket. I'm sure it's no coincidence that this is part of why Republicans and Democrats alike are loathe to implement M4A and universal tuition/fee free tertiary education. It would clamp down on the "volunteer" pipeline to the military. edit: this is not a proper quantitative analysis lol

I think it's sort of more interesting to look at how oppressed groups in the US are overrepresented in the military. In the military colonies like Guam you get huge numbers of people from there signing up compared to the rest of the US. Also how jobs are distributed within the military. Like, white men aren't the ones being found dead in ditches outside Ft. Hood.
