most paywalled papers are never actually read, but if they get quoted in a free article then the quote and reference is just copy pasted ad nauseum , to the extent that if the original quote is wrong it’ll be repeated in dozens of papers anyway lol

Unintended side-effect of :filez:ing at least some of my textbooks back in college is that besides saving a ton of money I still have them. All my other textbooks got traded in to the bookstore for like sixty bucks at the end of the semester or I got rid of em' later because I didn't feel like hauling them when moving apartments, but the PDF ones I still have and can refer back to (which I've actually done now and then)

From a mostly boring article on investors dot com that I stumbled on:

quote:

President Trump paid a seemingly low $750 in federal income tax in his first year in office, news reports say. But you might ask yourself, "If a billionaire can pay that little, how do I or my tax preparer whittle my tax liability to something that small?"

Yep, that's definitely my first thought, thanks.

I like how baffled this reporter is that PepsiCo could sell disgusting mac and cheese:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pepsis-new-cheetos-mac-and-cheese-is-flying-off-the-shelf-cfo-164833751.html

quote:

And who said soda giant PepsiCo (PEP) couldn’t make a good box of mac and cheese.

“The product is flying off the shelves,” PepsiCo CFO Hugh Johnston told Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade Thursday, referring to the company’s recently introduced Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese. Yahoo Finance first reported in July on the company’s entry into a category dominated for years by blue boxes sold by Kraft Heinz.

The launch isn’t as bizarre as it would seem at first blush. PepsiCo is no stranger to hawking packaged food — it has long sold Rice-a-Roni boxed rice and Aunt Jemima syrup under its Quaker Oats division.

Johnston said back in the summer the introduction was borne from PepsiCo studying new consumer eating trends amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The bet appears to be paying early dividends, and now has executives at the company thinking about ways to capitalize.

Who said PepsiCo couldn't make a box of mac and cheese huh??? Nobody? Literally nobody? Oh.

Anyway they saw the global pandemic, sent their marketers into a room to come up with a devious plan to make all the money, and they came back with...

Quad-post lol, I checked Pepsi's wiki page to confirm they owned Frito Lay and I wasn't just imagining that (they do) and saw this section:

quote:

In 1959, the USSR held an exhibition of Soviet technology and culture in New York. The United States reciprocated with an exhibition in Sokolniki Park, Moscow, which led to the famous kitchen debate. One of the American products exhibited was Pepsi Cola. After obtaining a photo of U.S. President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev sipping Pepsi, Pepsico executive Donald Kendall was able to capture the attention of the Soviet people and, in 1972, negotiate a cola monopoly in the USSR. Due to Soviet restrictions on transporting rubles abroad, PepsiCo struck a barter deal whereby Stolichnaya vodka would be exchanged for Pepsi syrup. This deal lasted until 1990, when the USSR and PepsiCo re-negotiated a $3 billion deal to exchange syrup for vodka and a small fleet of Soviet warships including 17 submarines, a frigate, a cruiser and a destroyer.[42][43][44] This deal fell through before it could take place due to the fall of the Soviet Union and was renegotiated with the former nations of the USSR. The new trade deal included receiving cheese from Russia to supply its Pizza Hut locations and receiving double-hulled tankers from Ukraine.

... what exactly was PepsiCo planning to do with 17 submarines, a frigate, a cruiser and a destroyer? :ohdear:

Stop for me, it's the claw!

The discussion here was 'these companies have paid no tax to the Australian government'. This person (who works for one of those companies) responds saying they shouldn't have to pay tax because their employees pay tax on the money they earn, and if these companies had to pay tax as well then they wouldn't be able to afford to pay their employees, and then no one would be able to pay any tax!

It was also discussed that since the companies are paying no tax, the people working for them are paying for the company to exist via government subsidy, hence the reply "What is wrong with my taxes paying for the company? They have provided me a job."

Imagine not knowing that "profits" are what's left over after you pay your employees and not the limiting factor to how much you can possibly pay your employees.

with a reported number of 1100+ employees 10% of the annual profit doesn't sound too bad

generally speaking CDPR is one of the least lovely big name devs, but yeah it's always fun when gamers are quick to ignore/forgive/forget bad practices as long as they get to play their games

Are profits determined after all expenses and and reinvestment occurs so they could basically make the profits whatever they wanted?

I just did some cursory looking and can't find anywhere that they actually define what they mean by "annual profit" or "2020" (fiscal year? calendar year? Is it going to include sales of this new game or not, because I think that'd be a pretty enormous difference) so good luck I guess.

dunno I'm just linking what I read this morning and briefly researched now

"10% of the annual profit our company generates in 2020" sounds like dangerous lawyerspeak but still, if it's in good faith it's a nice move in an industry plagued by terrible practices

in my limited, direct and indirect experience CDPR sounds like a studio that would do poo poo like this in good faith
